PEX-AL-PEX

With so many different kinds of PEX to choose from, how do you make a decision? The answer comes down to what your PEX project will entail. Is the PEX tubing going to be used for a radiant heat application or an open system? Is the PEX expected to withstand high temperatures? If you are looking for the perfect type of PEX for a high-temperature system, such as baseboard heat, PEX-AL-PEX is the perfect choice. PEX-AL-PEX consists of a layer of PEX, a layer of aluminum, and another layer of PEX. PEX-AL-PEX is also considered more convenient than other types of PEX is because it tends to hold its shape once you bend it, so it does not require fastening like more traditional forms of PEX. It additionally boasts an oxygen barrier, which assures that no oxygen enters the heating system. This is extremely important in heating applications because the presence of oxygen can rust and corrode the system's components.

Let The Sun Shine

With all this talk lately about the need to find renewable energy resources, all we have to do is look up! There is no source of energy more abundant than our own Sun. Our planet absorbs nearly 3,850,000 exajoules (EJ) of solar energy per year. This is as much energy in one hour than our entire human civilization uses in one year!

How can you take advantage of this powerful resource? You can start in your very own home. As I mentioned yesterday, water heating accounts for the second largest energy usage in our homes, behind heating and cooling. Caleffi manufactures a large selection of solar heat products, ranging from convenient Solar Water Heating Kits to SolarFlex Stainless Steel Piping- everything you need to get started with solar energy.

Caleffi's Solar Water Heating System Kits include all of the necessary components needed to install a solar water heating system. The kits comprise of the solar collectors, pump station and controller, storage tank, and all of the other corresponding hardware and components. You can choose from a system that accommodates 1 to 2 people, to one that is powerful enough to handle a 4 to 6 person household.

If you already have a solar water heating system in place, Caleffi also manufactures piping specific for solar uses. SolarFlex Stainless Steel Piping features pre-insulated flow and return pipes for solar hot water heating systems. The pipes are used to connect the solar collector with the storage tank, and because the insulation reduces heat loss in the system, the piping is also Earth-friendly!

No matter what your choice of solar energy usage is, you will be happy knowing that the decision you make is an unselfish one: the amount of solar energy to reach the Earth's surface in one year is almost double the amount that can ever be obtained from all of Earth's non-renewable resources combined. So go ahead, and take as much as you need!

Happy Earth Day!

There is no better way to celebrate and appreciate Mother Earth than to practice environmental friendliness in our homes. Through simple measures to cut down on energy losses everyday, we are taking great strides in making our planet a better place to live.

Did you know that almost half of the energy used in a home goes towards heating and cooling? Cut down on costs and wasted energy by installing a programmable thermostat. Programmable thermostats are designed to accommodate your family's lifestyle. Choose a lower temperature setting for hours during the day when the house is empty, and a higher temperature for when everyone returns. A lower temperature setting can also be set for times when the family is asleep or days when you are away on vacation. With brands ranging from Honeywell, White Rodgers, Robertshaw, Lux, and Tekmar, finding a programmable thermostat that suits your needs is simple and will reduce not only your energy bills, but also your greenhouse gas emissions.

Another area where you can reduce your carbon footprint is in water heating. Water heating accounts for the second largest energy usage in our homes, behind heating and cooling. If you are looking to replace an old water heater, consider purchasing one that is Energy Star Qualified, such as a Bradford White High Efficiency Water Heater. The Energy Star Qualified Bradford White Water Heaters feature 2" Non-CFC Foam Insulation. This layer of insulation reduces heat loss, which results in lower energy bills without cutting back on performance. The only place you will notice a difference is in your wallet!

Let Earth Day be a simple reminder that little differences can go a long way. From recycling trash to installing an energy-efficient device in your home, being environmentally-aware does not mean you have to sacrifice luxury or comfort. Steps taken to be Earth-friendly start in the home, but the results will be seen around the planet.

Programmable thermostats and Bradford White water heaters can be found at www.supplyhouse.com.

PEX Installation Made Easy

Because PEX tubing is so pliable and flexible, it has become a convenient choice for those looking for an alternative to copper pipe in their plumbing and heating systems.

Whereas copper pipe calls for cutting and soldering to turn a corner, PEX requires neither. To create a 90 degree bend, just snap the tubing into a PEX bend support. Bend supports are designed specifically to help PEX tubing turn corners. They are available in different materials and come in different sizes that correspond with the various tubing sizes.

Although the thought of a tangled jungle of PEX may seem daunting, don't let it deter you! To keep PEX tubing organized, you can secure it with zip ties or PEX clips. PEX clips are also available in different sizes and can accomodate even the most cumbersome of set-ups.

With these handy installation tools, you will find that setting up a PEX system in your home is not only faster than installing copper pipe, but it is also hassle-free.

Pain-Free PEX Stapling

Peter Mangone introduces a new way to tackle your radiant heating project: standing up! With the Reddi-Strip Stapler, there is no more bending, kneeling, or crouching to fasten PEX tubing. All you need to do is load the strips of flexible Reddi-Strip PEX staples, position the stapler over the PEX tubing, and fire away!

The Reddi-Strip Stapler utilizes Reddi-Strip Staples only. Use the S5RE-13 Reddi-Strip Staples on 1" foamboard and insulating tarp and the S5RE-16 staples on 1-1/2" and 2" foamboard. Although the staples are designed to securely fasten PEX tubing, tubing that is larger than 5/8" cannot be fastened.

To keep your Reddi-Strip Stapler in good shape, it is suggested that you regularly lubricate the chute opening around the plunging handle. Proper maintenance and proper use of your Reddi-Strip Stapler will leave it in good condition for future uses and ensure that sore backs and aching knees from PEX stapling are pains of the past!

Can I Use PEX With Steam?

Although PEX tubing is extremely versatile and can be used in a variety of applications, it should never be used in steam systems. The maximum liquid temperature that PEX can withstand is around 180 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature of steam is much hotter and you will run the risk of damaging your PEX pipe.

Basic Plumbing Tools

Every homeowner is bound to encounter his or her share of plumbing problems. Be it a leaky faucet or a clogged toilet, such tiny issues can quickly turn into bigger problems if they are not dealt with immediately. However, the majority of plumbing jobs call for the same basic tools. It is easy to be prepared! Keep a wrench, set of pliers, a screwdriver, some measuring tape, and a level ready to use. Also, a toilet plunger or toilet auger will come in handy whenever the toilet clogs. Remembering to have these items at hand will save you much time and effort (and not to mention, stress) the next time your home's plumbing surprises you.

Mini-Split Air Conditioners

If you are looking for a way to cool your home and find that installing ductwork is impossible, consider an LG or Sanyo Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioner. A mini-split air conditioner is composed of two units: the compressor unit, which is located outside of the home, and the air handler unit, which is placed inside the home.

Mini-splits are a small and convenient alternative to a ducted air conditioning system. Where ductwork installation calls for a massive amount of construction, mini-split units generally require only a three inch hole drilled through a wall for the conduit. Since they are ductless, they also avoid the energy losses attributed to ducted air conditioning systems. In comparison to other add-on units, mini-split air conditioners grant you more freedom in terms of placement options. They are available in wall-mounted, ceiling-suspended, ceiling-recessed, or floor-standing models and are less noisy, since the compressor is located outdoors.

Although a mini-split unit is a simple cooling solution for your home, installation is tricky. When choosing to purchase one, it is recommended that you seek a certified technician to perform the installation.

Ceramic Sink Maintenance

A ceramic sink, such as a Kraus Ceramic Bathroom Sink, can be a sleek and trendy addition to any bathroom. To retain its pristine appearance, it is important to take proper care of it. Hard water buildup can cause spotting or rough spots on a ceramic sink. After each use, use a dry cloth to wipe it dry. If mineral rough spots refuse to go away, fill your sink with a mixture of lukewarm water and white vinegar. Wait ten minutes, then use a sponge to scrub at the rough spots. Drain the sink, and rinse it with a solution of warm water and soap. Never scrub your sink with a scrubbing pad or metal sponge for it can damage the finish of the sink.

Garbage Disposal Maintenance

As the weather gets warmer and friends and family start to make regular appearances in your kitchen, now would be a good time to think about how you use your garbage disposal. Remember that hard-to-grind, gritty, or fibrous waste like carrots, banana peels, or poultry skins should be avoided. Such materials can dull the blades and get stuck underneath them. Grease should never be poured down the drain. A buildup of grease can clog the pipes and decrease the efficiency of your garbage disposal. It is best to run cold water down the drain for 15 seconds prior to and after using the device to flush materials down the pipes. Cold water should be used over hot water because higher water temperatures melt thicker materials, such as animal fats, which then stick to pipes and build up over time.

Just follow these simple steps and you can be sure that your garbage disposal will be in tip-top condition, ready to take on whatever hungry guests show up for dinner.

Sump Pumps For April Showers

Before we had a chance to say, "April showers bring May flowers", March rainstorms rocked our skies. If you have experienced episodes of excessively wet weather, you may want to check on your sump pump. Sump pumps send water away from a sump pit to a municipal storm drain or dry well. They are predominately used where basement flooding is common and where the water table is above the foundation of a home. Maintaining your sump pump is as easy as performing these simple tasks:

1. Check on the effectiveness of the sump pump's motor by pouring a bucket of water into the sump pit. If the pump does not start up automatically and drain the water, have a professional take a look at it.
2. Make sure that the pump not only turns on, but also pumps water out. A sump pump is useless if it doesn't take water away from your home.
3. Clear the grate of any any sand, dirt, or gravel that may have accumulated. A buildup of debris decreases efficiency and damages the pump over time.

During periods of excessive rainfall, you should inspect your sump pump more frequently. Doing so will ensure that you catch and fix any issues before April showers leave you with a flooded basement.

Eliminate Shower Drain Odors

The moist and damp conditions in your shower can cause your shower drain to smell and a buildup of hair and soap scum form a breeding ground for bacteria. To eliminate the odor and the germs, clean your strainer regularly by soaking it in vinegar. Also, you can pour half of a small box of baking soda down the drain, followed by 2 cups of vinegar. Let the mixture travel down and bubble inside the drain for an hour. After an hour, pour a gallon of boiling water down the drain to rinse away the gunk. Keep in mind that boiling water should only be used on metal pipes. If you have PEX pipe, run hot tap water down the drain. Boiling water will damage PEX pipe.

How To Cut PEX

To properly cut PEX pipe, be sure to use the correct PEX Tool: a PEX Cutter. A PEX Cutter is specially designed to cut through PEX pipe evenly. Where a hacksaw or copper pipe cutter may leave jagged and rough edges, a PEX Cutter ensures a clean and smooth cut. When cutting PEX pipe, first use a permanent marker to determine where you are to make the cut. Next, open the blade on the cutter and place the PEX pipe inside. One firm squeeze will cut most of the way through the pipe. To finish, rotate the cutter a quarter-turn before cutting through the rest.

Regulating Comfort & Safety

While it is extremely important for the temperature of your hot water to be set high enough to kill off dangerous germs and bacteria, scalding injuries are a real danger in households nation-wide. A thermostatic mixing valve, such as the Watts Series MMV-M1 Thermostatic Mixing Valve, regulates water temperature through use of a thermostat in the mixing chamber of the valve. Responding to mixed outlet temperature changes, the thermostat moves the seat assembly, allowing for the cold or hot water inlet ports to release more water. In extreme cases, such as the failure of the cold water supply, the seat assembly would completely shut off the hot inlet water port. Conversely, if the hot water supply were to suddenly fail, the cold inlet water port would be shut off. A thermostatic mixing valve thus regulates a constant outlet temperature, ensuring comfort and safety.

Why Do I Need An Expansion Tank?

An expansion tank is a necessity in your home. When the temperature in your hot water heater goes up, the water expands. Prior to the days when homes started using backflow preventers and check valves, this excess water would push the cold water back into the water main. Nowadays, however, the water remains in your plumbing system. The installation of an expansion tank prevents this expanded water from causing your hot water heater to malfunction from the increased pressure. When the heated water in your plumbing system expands, this excess water enters the expansion tank. When someone turns on a hot water faucet, hot water leaves the system and the expansion tank releases the extra water back into the water supply.

Expansion Tanks can be found at www.supplyhouse.com

Cover Your PEX

PEX is a leading contender for use in plumbing and heating projects, proving to be more affordable and more versatile than copper pipe. However, when PEX is used in outdoor applications, keep in mind that it cannot be used for outdoor aboveground purposes. In fact, the tubing should always be kept out of sunlight. Prior to installation, store PEX indoors or in the original packaging. Exposure lasting as little as 30 days will cause the PEX to degrade in quality and lose its effectiveness.

Everything you need for your PEX project can be found at www.supplyhouse.com

Drain Your Water Heater

Over time, sediment can accumulate in your water heater, which can drift into recirculation lines and jam open check valves. As a layer builds up on the bottom of the tank, small amounts of water can get trapped underneath. When heated, this trapped water turns to steam bubbles, which pop loudly and violently. If left alone, sediment slows heat transfer and overheats the bottom of the tank. This can weaken the steel and damage the glass lining, lowering both the efficiency and the lifespan of your heater. To avoid having to prematurely replace your water heater, you should drain your tank every year or so. How often depends on the source and purity of your water supply. Doing so will flush the sediments away and ensure that your water heater will continue to supply hot water to your home without interruption.

Water Heaters can be found at www.supplyhouse.com

Thermocouples For Safety

Gas water heaters utilize a pilot flame to light the main gas burner. If the pilot flame goes out, gas can be dangerously released. To prevent this, a thermocouple is used as a safety device to detect when the pilot light is burning. The tip of the thermocouple is placed in the pilot flame, generating a voltage which operates the supply valve that feeds gas to the pilot. As long as the pilot flame is lit, the thermocouple remains hot, and the pilot gas valve is held open. However, if the pilot flame goes out, the temperature of the thermocouple will drop and the electrical current will be disrupted. The gas supply will then shut off in response.

When To Replace A Sink Strainer

Sink strainers are designed to last a lifetime. However, under some circumstances, you may want to consider getting a new one:

1. If you are getting a new sink, getting a new sink strainer will ensure that the wear will be uniform on both the sink and the strainer.
2. If the sink strainer is leaking and beyond repair, it is time to replace it.
3. Finally, if the sink strainer is old and discolored, you may want to replace it for aesthetic purposes.

Toilet Augers To The Rescue

There is nothing worse than a clogged toilet that won't respond to the efforts of a plunger. If the clog in your toilet refuses to budge, even after multiple plunging attempts, it may be time let a toilet auger handle the job. A toilet auger (also known as a closet auger) is designed with an offset hand crank, a long sleeve handle, and an auger bit at the end to break through an obstruction. When using one, first inspect your toilet: some toilet bowls drain to the front, some to the rear. Make sure the curved end of the auger faces in the direction of the drain and push the cable into the drain carefully while cranking the handle in one direction. When it becomes difficult to turn the handle, crank it in the opposite direction until the auger is in as far as it will go. Crank the auger to break up the clog. If it feels as though the auger grabbed onto whatever was clogging the drain, pull it out to check. If it gets stuck, push and pull gently or turn the crank back and forth while pulling up (never use an auger too forcefully or you may scratch or damage the toilet). After clearing up the blockage, use a plunger to ensure that the clog is complete gone. Keep in mind that this job can get messy, especially if you pull the blockage back out through the pipe. Have a bucket and some rags on hand just in case.

What Is That Noise?

Don't be alarmed if your kitchen faucet suddenly starts whistling like a tea kettle. This sharp and high-pitched noise can be attributed to water pressure that is either too high or too low. Simply adjust the pressure from the faucet's shut-off valve until the water pressure is normal again and the sound stops. If the noise still persists, the issue may be lodged debris in the faucet. To fix this, you will need to remove the supply line from under the sink, then blow compressed air into the faucet to clear it.

Signs Of A Faulty T & P Relief Valve

The job of the temperature and pressure relief valve on your hot water heater is to release excessive pressure from the steam build-up inside. However, if you have been hearing bubbling noises in the hot water heater and/or your faucets have been releasing dangerously hot water or steam, your temperature & pressure relief valve may be defective. If this is the case, turn down the water heater's temperature and allow the water to cool before handling the issue.

Preventing A Frozen Pipe

No homeowner wants to deal with a burst pipe. If you have a frozen pipe in your home, it is suggested that running hot water through the pipe system for a few minutes can help to thaw it out. However, to avoid frozen pipes in the first place, you should regularly turn on the warm water in your faucets. This will help warm the cold pipes and potentially prevent pipes from freezing.

Single Handle Faucets

When picking a faucet to suit young children or older users who have trouble turning round knobs, a single handle faucet is the best choice. Its lever-styled handle makes for a new sink experience and can be turned on and shut off with ease. When young children use sinks, they tend to reach for only one handle. A single handle faucet eliminates the chance that the water coming out of the tap will be scalding hot. The simplicity and ease of use of a single handle faucet make it an ideal choice for all households.

Sanitize Your Wooden Cutting Board

The wooden cutting board gets a lot of use in the kitchen. Whether it's used for cutting, dicing, or slicing, it is one kitchen tool that every household needs. However, bacteria from raw foods can seep into the cracks and contaminate the wood. That is why it is extremely important to keep your cutting board clean and sanitized. You should clean your cutting board after each use, scrubbing it thoroughly with hot, soapy water. To sanitize your cutting board, use a diluted liquid chlorine bleach solution of one teaspoon of bleach combined with one quart of water. Pour the solution onto the entire surface area of the board and let it sit undisturbed for a few minutes. Rinse the board with water to clean, and then dry it with a cloth or allow it to air dry. When storing the board, it should stand vertically to avoid any accumulation of moisture and dust. Following these simple steps will ensure that your cutting board (and your loved ones) are free from harmful bacterias.

Cleaning Your Faucet Aerator

Don't wait until the water coming from your faucet is reduced to a trickle to clean your faucet aerator. By the time stubborn deposits have formed, you may need to throw it away. Cleaning it regularly will prevent such build-ups. When cleaning a faucet aerator, close the drain to prevent losing any parts. Unscrew the aerator from the spout and remove the parts that make up the aerator (just be sure to remember their order and placement for reassembly). For those especially hard-to-remove deposits, soak the pieces in white vinegar for a few minutes. Rinse all of the parts with water and scrub with a toothbrush, if necessary. Reassemble the faucet aerator, screw it back onto the spout, and enjoy the steady flow of water once again!

What Is A Squirrel Cage?

For all of you animal lovers out there, fear not-- A squirrel cage is not actually a device in which to entrap your furry little friends. The name describes the cage-like shape of a squirrel cage rotor (the rotating part often used in an AC induction motor). The motor is equipped with rings at either end of the rotor and has bars connecting the rings that run the length of the rotor, thus resembling the shape of a hamster or squirrel wheel. When the squirrel cage becomes bent out of shape, it can interfere with the functioning of the motor. If you are looking to replace a worn-out squirrel cage on your squirrel cage rotor, Carrier manufactures a replacement squirrel cage. Don't wait until your motor burns out to get a new one!

Let Your Baseboards Breathe

To get the most out of your electric baseboard heater, it is important to allow for sufficient airflow. Electric baseboard heaters convert cool air pulled in from the bottom into heated air released out of the top of the heater. Anything blocking the flow of air into the heater will impede the heating process and decrease energy efficiency. Therefore, furniture should not be positioned up against the heaters and thick carpet or rugs should be kept clear of the heater space. Also, heater coils should be dusted regularly, as accumulation will reduce both heat production and the lifespan of the heater.

Wallet-Friendly Heating

As the temperature outside dips, you may be tempted to raise your thermostat settings to keep out the winter chill, but there are ways to stay warm without raising your heating costs. Using furnaces and heaters wisely can cut on heating expenses during the winter. For example, each degree you lower your thermostat can lower your heating bill between one and three percent. Setting your thermostat at 68 degrees is warm enough for comfort, yet low enough to save substantially on costs. In addition to lower settings, consider installing a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat such as a Honeywell Programmable Thermostat adjusts temperature settings while you sleep or when no one is home. Equipped with an easy-to-read display, Honeywell's Programmable Thermostat offers the simplicity and convenience of a basic thermostat with energy savings that your wallet will truly appreciate.

Garbage Disposal Leaks

A garbage disposal makes food preparation and clean-up a breeze: it breaks up food pieces to prevent them from clogging the sink drain, while reducing odors from decaying food. However, if your garbage disposal is leaking, it may be time for a tune-up. First, to avoid electric shock, it is important to make sure that the power is off (not just the switch that operates the garbage disposal). Next, inspect the screws on the drainage pipe. If they are loose, tighten them, then turn on the water to see if the garbage disposal is still leaking. In the area where the garbage disposal meets the sink, make sure that the bolts are tight. Check the plumber's putty. If water still leaks, you may need to apply more plumbers putty to the sink's flange. Wait until the putty is dry before you turn the water back on- and don't forget to turn the power back on as well!

How To Clean A Sink Sprayer

A kitchen sink with a pull-out sink sprayer comes in handy when doing the dishes or cleaning the sink. If the sprayer suddenly stops working, it could be due to a build up of mineral deposits and debris. To clean it, you must first dismantle the sprayer from the sink by using a wrench to unscrew the base of the hose from where it joins the sink. Remove the spray head to access the aerator. Next, remove the diverter from its sink recess and soak it in a cleaning solvent, such as white vinegar or lemon juice. Use a stiff bristle brush to scrub away the accumulated deposits. When you are confident the sink sprayer is clean, rinse the components in water and dry with a paper towel. Reassemble the components and enjoy the convenience of your kitchen sink sprayer once again.

Unconventional PEX Uses

PEX (or cross-linked polyethylene) is most commonly used in the form of tubing for hydronic radiant heating systems and PEX plumbing. Its flexibility and durability makes it an easy and convenient alternative to more traditional copper piping. However, did you know that PEX has other uses, too? PEX has been used as a composite filling material in dental restoration and can be found in the hulls of some canoes and kayaks! Although we strongly do not recommend taking your PEX Tube for a ride in the ocean, it is nice to know that PEX is a trusted material in important applications, no matter what form it is in.

Plumbing With Bread

Soldering paste and a quality soldering torch are necessary to have on hand when soldering a copper joint, but did you know that the answer to a common plumbing nuisance can be found in your kitchen pantry? A small drip from the existing water in the line can get in the way while you are soldering. To stop this, take a slice of white bread, remove the crust, roll it into a firm ball, and insert it into the pipe. The bread will absorb the trickle of water and stop the drip so that you can continue soldering. Turn on the water supply after you are finished to flush the bread away and into the drain system.

The Tankless Alternative

A tankless water heater is a great alternative to a traditional water heater. Instead of storing hot water in a tank, it heats water by circulating the incoming water through a series of electric coils or gas burners that heat up when a tap or appliance is turned on. Hot water is not sitting in a tank waiting to be used, but is instead heated only when needed. With a tankless water heater, the energy used to heat the hot water in your home is always efficiently used and never wasted.

Save Your Sink, Save Your Food

For the busy cook who never thought twice before tossing a pot into the sink or the clumsy cook cursed with dropping food, a bottom sink grid is an especially useful kitchen accessory. Not only does it protect the sink from dents and scratches, but it also salvages food dropped during food preparation. Most bottom sink grids, such as Elkay's Bottom Sink Grids, are fitted with feet to further avoid contact with the sink's bottom and are available in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit your kitchen sink. A bottom sink grid made from stainless steel, such as Elkay's 17-1/8" x 19-1/8" Bottom Sink Grid, neither corrodes nor rusts, so you can feel free to pour boiling water into the sink without damaging the sink grid.

Dirty Showerhead? Try Vinegar!

If your showerhead is clogged with the build-up of mineral deposits, it may be time to clean it. A safe and eco-friendly way to clean a showerhead involves something that many of us already have in our homes: vinegar. First, fill a saucepan with distilled white vinegar. Unscrew the showerhead and place it in the saucepan so that it is completely submerged by the vinegar. Next, place the saucepan on the stove, allowing the showerhead to simmer for a few minutes- how long depends on the amount of build-up that has accumulated. It is important to make sure that the showerhead is not sitting on the bottom of the saucepan, but rather floating in the vinegar. Also, avoid boiling or turning the heat up too high as the showerhead could melt. After you are confident that the showerhead is clean, remove it from the vinegar and rinse it with water. Screw it back on and turn on the water to ensure that it is clear of all deposits and is ready to use again.

Punctured Pipe? Not A Problem!

A simple and easy way to repair a punctured PEX water pipe without disturbing the surrounding pipes is to cut out the section of tubing with the puncture in it and replace it with a coupling to join the two sides. This process secures the pipe and ensures that a leak will not happen again. For a worry-free and reliable coupling, try the SharkBite Coupling. The fitting doesn't require any tools or soldering and can be pushed into place quickly and easily.

Therma-cel Pipe Insulation

Insulation in hot water pipes cuts down on heat loss and can raise water temperature 2ºF–4ºF warmer than in uninsulated pipes. A quality pipe insulation, such as Nomaco K-Flex's Therma-cel Pipe Insulation, works to slow heat loss. This lessens the wait for hot water, which conserves water usage, and allows you to lower your water temperature setting, which saves energy. Therma-cel Pipe Insulation also prevents condensation and frost formation when used with cold water plumbing or air-conditioning lines.

Pressure-Balancing Valves

A sudden change in water pressure (such as someone flushing a toilet or starting up a load of laundry) can cause your shower to go from warm to scalding hot in seconds. To prevent this, you will need to install a pressure-balancing valve in your shower. Kohler's Rite-Temp Pressure-Balancing Valve features a high-temperature limit stop and an optimal comfort zone, allowing you to set a maximum high and then find and maintain your desired water temperature. The unit also works to prevent water temperature from suddenly dipping during instances when hot water is diverted.

Stainless Steel Sinks

A stainless steel sink is a sleek and contemporary addition to your kitchen. To maintain the sink's look and cleanliness, it is important to clean it both regularly and properly. Dirt and materials such as lime, salt, and calcium that accumulate from washing pots and pans can damage the sink over time. You should rinse a stainless steel sink with mild soap water after every use and then dry it with a soft towel. Dish washing detergent, glass cleaner, or a solution of ammonia can also be used, but stay away from cleaning agents that are abrasive or solutions that contain chlorine. Steel wool pads and cleaning tools such as brushes should be avoided as well.

Faucet Aerators Save Both Water & Money

To cut down on water usage in your home, consider replacing your old faucet aerators. An aerator, which is the screw-on tip of the faucet, ultimately determines the maximum flow rate of a faucet. If your faucets are more than ten years old, they are most likely in need of new aerators. Normally, new kitchen faucets come installed with aerators that restrict flow rates to 2 gpm (gallons per minute), while new bathroom faucets have ones that restrict flow rates from 1.5 to 0.5 gpm. A faucet aerator such as Wal-rich's 55/64" Chrome Plated Female Faucet Aerator has a flow rate of 2 gpm. Replacing an old aerator is inexpensive and is considered to be one of the most cost-effective ways to conserve water.

Frozen Pipes

Frozen pipes are a common occurence during the cold season. To thaw a frozen pipe in your home, try turning on each faucet. If the water is flowing, run warm water through the pipes to help thaw the frozen spot. If no water flows, find the most likely places where pipes may freeze, such as unheated basements or crawl spaces. Turn on the faucets and use a hair dryer, portable heater, or warm wet rags to thaw the pipe. However, when water freezes inside PEX tubing, be sure to not overheat the tubing beyond the maximum recommended temperature.

Indirect Water Heaters

If you are looking for a smart and energy efficient way to heat the water in your home, try using an indirect water heater, such as a Weil Mclain Indirect Water Heater. Indirect water heaters use a boiler to circulate hot water from the boiler through a heat exchanger in a water heater tank. The energy stored by the tank allows a furnace to turn off and on less often, which saves energy. When used in conjunction with a high-efficiency boiler, an indirect water heater can be a cost-effective way to provide hot water for your home.

Prevent Unwanted Backflow

A backflow prevention device is used to ensure that water supplies are protected from contamination or pollution. Where water pressure fails or is reduced, dirty water from the ground or other sources can be drawn into the system. A backflow preventer such as a reduced pressure zone assembly, vacuum breaker, or a dual check valve can save you from the troubles of water contamination. Reduced pressure detectors and backflow prevention test kits additionally monitor and test the status of the device. Keep in mind that in some locations, backflow prevention devices are required by law and must be installed in accordance with plumbing or building codes.

Clean your garbage disposal

A garbage disposal can be a great kitchen tool- it makes preparing food quicker and keeps your kitchen cleaner. But if your garbage disposer gets clogged or begins to smell, it can be way more trouble than it's worth. But don't worry, keeping your garbage disposal clean and odor-free is actually pretty easy. Just put a mixture of ice cubes, orange rinds, and a little baking soda down every once in a while. The ice cubes will eliminate any blockages and even sharpen the blades. And the orange rinds and baking soda will deodorize the unit so that it won't smell anymore.

What is the difference between different colors of PEX?

Different colors of PEX Tubing are structurally and functionally exactly the same, the only difference is the outside color. For PEX Plumbing tubing, there are typically three colors: red, white and blue. When installing, red is used for hot water and blue is used for cold water. This is a great way to see exactly which pipes go where, especially when there are a lot of pipes in one place. If you don't want to use the colors, the white PEX Tubing can be used for all of your plumbing needs.

Manabloc Supply

There are 3 separate supply lines that lead into a Manabloc PEX Manifold. Since the MANABLOC system is made for plumbing, there are no return lines. There are never return lines in plumbing manifolds because once the water goes out, it does not come back to be re-circulated. Since there are three separate supply lines (2 cold and 1 hot) that come into your Manabloc, you will need 3 supply adapters in order to connect your PEX Tubing. If you do not need to connect both cold lines and the hot line, you may use a supply end cap to cap off the line not being used.

Cut down on noise from your baseboard system with PEX

PEX tubing is a great option for your baseboard heating system and is much quieter than copper pipe. This is because the unrestrained liner expansion rate for PEX is much lower than the rate for copper pipe. For every 10 degree increase in temperature, standard PEX expands 1.1 inches per 100 feet.

Don't heat rooms you don't use

Do you have a room in your house that isn't used all the time-- a child away at college or maybe a guest bedroom? Don't heat it when it's empty! By having zones in your heating system, you will be able to separate where the heat is turned on, and where it can be left off. There is no reason to heat a room when noone goes into it, but you still want to be able to turn the heat back on when you need to. With a zone valve and zone control, that's easy. So save some energy, set up heating zones, and only heat the rooms you use.

Save water with each flush

You're flushing your money down the toilet if you're not using an efficient flush valve. Noone will ever know that you're using less water, except if they see your water bill. While standard flushers use 5 gallons or more of water per flush, a high efficiency flush valve can use as little as 2 gallons. Three gallons of water might not seem like a lot, but multiply it by the number of times your toilet is flushed per month and it adds up to big savings.

Extend the life of your grease trap

A restaurant grease trap can take a beating over the years, but there are some things you can do to protect your grease trap and extend its life. First, inform all of the restaurant employees of how the grease trap works. If they know how it works, they will be less likely to abuse it and throw a whole vat of oil or large pieces of food down the sink. Second, make sure there is a strainer in all of the sinks. A strainer will keep the solids out of the sink, out of your pipes, and out of the grease trap. Third, make sure to do regular cleanings of the grease trap when it gets to be about half full. Allowing it to fill all the way to the top could slow your system, and not cleaning it thoroughly and allowing old grease to remain at the bottom of the trap for years is not good for the grease trap or the person assigned to clean it.

Uncoiling PEX

Uncoiling your PEX Tubing can be difficult, especially in the cold weather. To make it easier, you can do two things. First, keep the PEX tubing in a warm place for as long as possible before you use it. Keeping it warm will allow it to become more pliable and easier to set in place where you want it. There is also a tool to help with uncoiling PEX. A PEX Uncoiler is especially useful when you have large coils or when you are working with a lot of tubing.

Never let your heating pipes freeze again

With traditional copper pipes, it's usually not the pipe that freezes, it's the water inside. For heating pipes, glycol is the perfect solution. By using a mixture of glycol and water, you will get the same full heating capacity as with water, but the glycol anti-freeze will prevent the liquid from freezing (even in the coldest temperatures). Glycol can also be used in PEX tubing for radiant heat systems. Just be sure not to use glycol in plumbing pipes where you will be drinking the water.

How is a gate valve different from a ball valve?

A gate valve allows you to control the amount of water that comes through. By using a knob, a gate valve lets you to allow no water, just a little water, most of the water, or all of the water through. You can turn the knob a little or a lot and determine the exact of flow that you want. A ball valve only has on or off. If you turn the handle one way, it's on. If you turn the handle the other way, it's off. There is no in between, you either get full flow or no flow.

How to attach a pump

To secure your pump into your heating system, you will need a set of pump flanges. Flanges should be purchased based on the size of the pipe that you are connecting to. For example, if you are putting your pump on a 1" pipe, you will need 1" flanges. Shut-off flanges, or isolation flanges, can be helpful because you can stop the water flowing to the pump right at the source.

Make a clean cut

All PEX connections require a clean, even cut in your PEX tubing. Without a clean cut, it is incredibly difficult to create a secure fitting. If your tubing is uneven, the rings and fittings will not fit properly on the tubing and you can get a leak. To make sure that you have a clean cut for a secure fitting, use a PEX tubing cutter. Even if you have another blade that you use to cut everything else, a PEX tube cutter is a worthwhile investment at under $20.00 because it will create a perfect and worry-free cut in your PEX every time.

Norton Hot Surface Ignitors

Robertshaw 41-400 Series hot surface ignitors reach ignition temperatures within 17 seconds as electricity passes through the Silicon Carbide and makes it glow red hot. Operating under normal conditions a hot surface ignitor will last for 3 to 5 years, at which point they are easy to replace, similar to light bulbs. Most ignitors are interchangeable as long as they fit in the furnace space provided.

Robertshaw Norton Hot Surface Ignitors are available at www.supplyhouse.com.
