What are my options for Radiant Heating in floor joists?

There are several options for radiant heating between floor joists. The two most popular are using joist trak and using pex clips. With joist trak extruded aluminum plates are placed in between the joists, and the PEX Tubing is snapped into these plates. When using pex clips, you attach the pex clips in between the joists and run the PEX Tubing through these clips.

What different types of radiant heat installations are possible?

There are many different options for radiant heat installations. These include in slab, between joists, using Quik Trak over an existing sub floor, and in ceilings. The most popular of these would be placing PEX tubing in a slab and placing PEX Tubing in floor joists. However, Quik Trak is gaining popularity due to ease of installation over an existing subfloor.

What controls do I need to zone a radiant heat system?

There are several different ways to control the zones in a radiant heat system. The first is to use zone valves to control the flow to individual manifolds in a radiant heat system. The second way is to use actuators (either thermal or motorized) to control the flow of each loop on a manifold. By doing this you can create more than one zone on a given manifold. Finally you can use pumps such as the Taco 007 pump to control the flow to each zone. There are advantages and disadvantages to each method. Depending upon the particuliar radiant system you are designing, one application may be more beneficial than another. (11/6/05)

What type of PEX Tubing should I use for Radiant Heat applications?

If there are any ferrous(metal) components in your system, such as cast iron taco pumps, iron valves, black fittings, cast iron fittings... you must use an oxygen barrier PEX Tubing. The oxygen barrier will prevent rusitng of these components in the system. At SupplyHouse.com we sell five types of Oxygen Barrier PEX Tubing. These are Wirsbo HePEX Tubing, Mr. PEX Tubing, Zurn Barrier Tubing, Wirsbo Multicor PEX-Al-PEX Tubing, and Safelink PEX-Al PEX Tubing. A further discussion of these items will be available early next week. For Radiant and Hydronic heating systems without ferrous components you may use any type of PEX Tubing sold on SupplyHouse.com.
