Uponor's AQUACENTER Manifold

In “home run” piping schemes for plumbing systems, distribution lines run from a single manifold to each individual fixture. These systems cut down on the number of necessary fittings, promote stable water pressure, and speed up the delivery time for hot and cold water. Viega’s MANABLOC is a popular choice for home run PEX plumbing systems. With individual shut-off valves for each distribution port, it combines hot and cold manifolds into a single unit and is available with PEX press, crimp, or compression fittings.

For installers who want to use ProPEX expansion-style fittings with a valved PEX manifold for home run distribution, there’s Uponor’s AQUACENTER manifold. The manifolds can be installed in 3/4” or 1” hot or cold lines. They run 1/2” PEX-A to fixtures and use only ProPEX fittings. Multiple AQUACENTER manifolds may be joined together with the appropriate coupling. Supply inlet adapters and mounting brackets must be purchased separately. See SupplyHouse.com for more PEX plumbing and Uponor products.

SharkBite Fitting Sleeve

SharkBite fittings make it easy to connect piping without soldering or buying a PEX tool. Perfect for do-it-yourselfers, SharkBites are a great solution for small jobs. The fittings work with PEX, copper, and CPVC. Each SharkBite includes a small, white plastic sleeve inside the fitting. The sleeve is designed to stiffen PEX inside the fitting. When using copper, the sleeve does not serve any purpose and can be removed. It may also be left in the fitting, reducing flow by a very small amount. To purchase SharkBite fittings and accessories, visit SupplyHouse.com.

Stop Water Hammer Noise

Water hammer occurs when the normal flow of water in pipes is interrupted. It can create loud noises and vibrations. A water hammer arrestor cuts down on these effects. Its captive volume of air absorbs the force of the water hammer, reducing or eliminating the annoying sounds.

SupplyHouse.com carries water hammer arrestors from several manufacturers, including Sioux Chief and Watts. Cash-Acme’s SharkBite water hammer arrestors work like a regular SharkBite fitting, easily adapting to PEX, copper, or CPVC.

How to Connect PEX to PVC

In certain applications, including retrofits, it may be necessary to connect PEX to PVC. No single fitting can do this, but there are options. PVC fittings must be glued to PVC pipe. The opposite side of certain fittings has male or female pipe thread. A PVC x male threaded fitting, for example, could attach to a female threaded x PEX fitting. When threading plastic threads to metal threads, it is best to have male threads on the plastic fitting. When used together, these two fittings can connect PEX to PVC. The PEX fitting may be crimp/clamp, ProPEX, compression, or SharkBite style. The choice among these should be based on the tool individual installers own and prefer.

SupplyHouse.com offers Spears PVC fittings, Hercules PVC installation products, and a wide variety of PEX fittings.

Easily Monitor Heating Oil Levels

The OEM Rocket Wireless Fuel Level Monitor lets users keep track of the amount of heating oil remaining in their storage tank. The transmitter mounts to the oil tank. It uses ultrasonic waves to detect the amount of oil remaining in the tank and communicates with a receiver in the home. The receiver must be powered through a standard electrical outlet. It may be placed up to 150 feet away from the transmitter (which is shaped like a rocket and has a battery life of over a decade). The receiver displays oil amounts in 10% increments, with a warning when the tank falls below 10% capacity.

This system puts an end to the need for trips to a cold basement or treks through snow to monitor remaining fuel visually. It’s also more accurate. Visit SupplyHouse.com for more information.

Uponor "Engineered Polymer"

Uponor’s ProPEX fittings work with PEX-A tubing (including hePEX and AquaPEX) using the “expansion” method. A special tool expands the tubing and a corresponding ring, which shrink back to size around a ProPEX fitting. ProPEX fittings are reliable and have the same inside diameter of PEX tubing, minimizing any loss in flow.

EP ProPEX fittings, formerly “Engineered Plastic,” are now known as Engineered Polymer. The name change reflects the properties of the fittings more accurately. Always lead-free, EP fittings contain high-quality thermoplastic polymers. These materials have been in use in medicine and aerospace products for years, in addition to plumbing. Their durability makes them perfect for direct burial and otherwise demanding plumbing and heating installations,

Fittings for Soft Copper

Copper tubing is produced in two different tempers: drawn and annealed (or, in more common terms, hard and soft). Installers generally join hard copper tubing by soldering, brazing, welding, or with capillary fittings. Although it is possible to connect soft copper by these same methods, flare and compression fittings are commonly used. Soft copper can also be expanded and soldered/brazed to another tube without the use of a fitting. SharkBite fittings work with both hard and soft copper. When working with soft copper, it is recommended to incorporate a straight run of tubing for at least a few inches immediately after the fitting.

SupplyHouse.com offers a wide selection of fittings and copper tubing.

Bend Supports for PEX Tubing

PEX bend supports, available on SupplyHouse.com in metal, plastic, and PVC, protect PEX tubing at the point it exits a concrete slab. Through a process known as linear expansion, PEX grows longer when the water it carries gets hotter. In fact, PEX lengthens at about ten-times the rate of copper. The exact rate of linear expansion for PEX is 1.1 inches per 10°F temperature rise per 100 feet of PEX. PEX bend supports at the area of slab penetration protect the tubing from wear as it expands and contracts. In addition, bend supports provide a more finished look and facilitate installations in tight spaces.

Add Ports to a MANABLOC

Viega’s MANABLOC plumbing manifold allows you to run a separate line to each fixture from a central location. Each line has its own shut-off, making maintenance on one line possible without cutting off water to the rest of the house. Water reaches fixtures more quickly with these “home run” setups, while pressure stays more stable if multiple fixtures are running.

Each MANABLOC is divided between hot and cold on the inside and has a set number of hot and cold distribution ports. If you need to add more ports, a MINIBLOC may be installed in-line. It adds more hot ports if placed on the hot water line or more cold ports on the cold line. Visit SupplyHouse.com for more Viega products and MANABLOC accessories.

Zoning a Hydronic Heating System

When you’re creating zones in a hydronic heating system, you have two options: circulator pumps and zone valves. Both do the same job of allowing heat into areas (zones) of a building that call for heat from the thermostat. Each method is reliable, and the choice between the two ultimately comes down to a matter of personal preference. The one advantage of using circulators is that your entire heating system does not depend on a single circulator. Zone valves have the benefit of smaller electrical draws.

SupplyHouse.com offers a wide-range of circulator pumps, zone valves, and controls from leading manufacturers.

PEX Tube Talons

PEX tube talons hold PEX tubing to wood surfaces. They are normally used in plumbing applications (to hold PEX lines in place) and heating applications where PEX must be secured to a subfloor. They are not recommended for joist bay installations, where there should be a gap between the wood surface and the tubing. The talons combine a plastic piece that holds the PEX with a nail to attach to wood.

SupplyHouse.com offers basic tube talons by the bag for 3/8”, 1/2”, 3/4”, and 1” PEX. Sioux Chief’s 555-23 talons are unique in that they work with three different sizes of PEX tubing: 1/2”, 5/8”, and 3/4”. This means fewer purchases, as well as reduced inventory for contractors.

Insulate or Re-Insulate Your Pipes

SupplyHouse.com stocks two types of pipe insulation: Insul-Lock and Thermacel. Insulating pipes cuts down on wasted energy: boiler piping loses less heat to the boiler room, domestic hot water lines preserve more heat on the way to fixtures, and air conditioning refrigerant lines stay cooler.

1/2” thick Thermacel insulation is available in 6’ lengths for 1/2”, 3/4”, and 1” nominal plumbing and heating pipes (i.e. pipes with outside diameters of 5/8”, 7/8”, and 1-1/8”). Insul-Lock also comes in 6’ lengths, but with more wall thickness and pipe size options. Insul-Lock makes installation easy with a pre-cut slit and adhesive strip. It can even replace old or worn pipe insulation. For more information, please view the video featured on the pipe insulation product pages.

Thermostats & Daylight Saving Time

Programmable thermostats operate based on a schedule, usually of four operating periods each day. This saves money by allowing home comfort systems to operate at lower capacity overnight and during non-peak periods of occupancy. Many programmable thermostats have an option that allows them to update their clock automatically for time changes due to daylight saving time. The clocks in Honeywell VisionPRO 8000 and Prestige series thermostats not only automatically adjust for daylight saving time, but also maintain the correct time during power failures. Other models that feature automatic time-changing ability include White-Rodgers 90 Series, Robertshaw i2, and Venstar Color Touch thermostats.

Thursday, November 03, 2011

“Power Stealing” Thermostats

“Power Stealing” thermostats do not need batteries to operate, negating the need for any maintenance and preventing unexpected shutdowns. They “steal” 24-volt power from a furnace, boiler, or control to which the thermostat is wired. Most zone valve controls and switching relays have transformers that provide low voltage thermostats with the necessary 24 volts. Batteries may be needed for backup power to the thermostat in the event of a power failure. For a wide selection of thermostats, including Honeywell, White-Rodgers, and Robertshaw models, please visit SupplyHouse.com.

Rotten Egg Smell in Hot Water

Anode rods protect the lining of water heater tanks against corrosion. In rare instances they can contribute to foul-smelling hot water that has the odor of rotten eggs. This may occur when there are high sulfur and low oxygen concentrations in supply water. The anode rod promotes the generation of hydrogen which, along with sulfur-eating bacteria, is the final cause of the smell.

Removing the anode rod may be the easiest fix for this problem, but doing so shortens the life of the tank and voids the warranty on most models. Many manufacturers offer specially-designed aluminum anode rods that, along with chlorination of the unit, minimize the unpleasant smell. A.O. Smith units require a KA-90 anode rod to fight the rotten egg odor, while Bradford White recommends A420 anode rods. These are the water heater brands SupplyHouse.com carries. For information on other water heaters, contact a local installer, representative, or retailer.

Air Ventilators: ERV vs. HRV

Air ventilators improve indoor air quality, maximizing clean and healthy air while minimizing contaminants and moisture. There are two types of in-line ventilators: Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs) and Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRVs). Both contain a supply and exhaust motor in one unit, bringing in fresh air from outside and pulling stale air from the living space. The unit’s recovery core ensures incoming air is not too cold during the winter or too warm in the summer.

The core in an ERV unit transfers heat and moisture to outgoing air, making ERVs perfect for the warm and dry Southeastern United States. They clean air and reduce the load on air conditioners.

HRVs are recommended in all cold climates, in addition to warm areas that are dry. They bring in an amount of air equal to that which they exhaust, transferring heat from warmer to colder air. HRVs also use defrost protection that allows year-round operation. Visit SupplyHouse.com to browse Fantech and Honeywell ventilators.

DIY Baseboard Wall Brackets

The DIY Baseboard Heater covers available online exclusively at SupplyHouse.com resist rust and install easily. They feature a unique design that modernizes any room. The covers replace most standard-sized baseboard covers in retrofit designs by snapping to existing back plates. When there are no back plates, specially designed wall brackets support the covers. The brackets must be screwed to wall studs 7” above the floor.

The wall brackets are black (rather than the white of the actual covers). This allows them to be invisible when looking down at the covers. The area inside the covers appears black after installation. White wall brackets would stand out, diminishing the attractive look of the covers.

Grease Trap Installation

Grease traps should be installed as close to the grease source as possible. This protects the maximum amount of pipes and keeps incoming water at the highest temperature possible. High temperatures are conducive to optimal grease separation. Although grease traps usually go underground, they may also be placed on the floor, partially recessed, or positioned so that the cover is flush with the floor. Keep in mind that grease traps are not designed to bear heavy loads or deal with consistent foot traffic.

A flow control device regulates flow of waste material from incoming fixtures, ensuring water is not flowing too rapidly (or too slowly) for appropriate separation of the fluid to take place. A single grease trap should only be hooked up to multiple fixtures when they are located close together. It is recommended that a separate grease trap be used for every commercial dishwasher.

Monoflo Tees & Kick-Space Heaters

Monoflo tees are important parts of many kick-space heater installations. Also known as a diverter tees or venturi tees, these fittings move some of the flow in a hydronic system to a secondary loop. Kick-space heaters only require monoflo tees if the units are installed on a secondary line that splices off the main baseboard line. In these cases, since water follows the path of least resistance, monoflo tees allow sufficient flow to reach the kick-space heater. If the heater is positioned on the same straight line between two baseboards, for example, a monoflo tee is not necessary. SupplyHouse.com stocks kick-space heaters from Beacon-Morris and Slant/Fin.

Methods of Heat Transfer

Heat travels from warmer areas to colder areas through three modes of heat transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction transfers heat by physical contact, as warmer molecules shift their energy to colder ones. Convective heat transfer occurs in fluids (liquids and gases), such as air. Warmer air is less dense than cooler air and rises above it. The cycle operates continuously and creates convection currents. In radiation, waves of heat energy travel through space from a warmer surface to a colder surface. Radiation occurs on a daily basis whenever anyone feels the rays of the sun.

Forced air and baseboard heating systems take advantage of convective currents. Systems with radiators or in-floor tubing (radiant heat) primarily use radiation. See SupplyHouse.com for heating products for any type of heating system.

MANABLOC Supply Adapters

Viega’s MANABLOC PEX Plumbing manifold includes all fittings for the distribution ports. It is available with PEX press, crimp, and compression connections at these ports. The MANABLOC does not include any supply adapters for its three supply ports. This is because the MANABLOC can be fed with either 3/4” or 1” supply lines. Viega produces PEX press, crimp, and male NPT (threaded) supply adapters. SupplyHouse.com’s MANABLOC packages include two 3/4” supply adapters, along with mounting straps, an extra valve adjustment handle, and an end cap for the third supply port.

The third supply port remains unused (and should be capped off) unless the water heater’s supply line runs to the MANABLOC before it goes to the water heater. Generally, the water heater has a separate supply, making the third supply port unnecessary.

Test your Water Pressure

The Boshart PG25 Water Test Gauge measures water pressure in your system. Its 3/4” hose thread allows the gauge to connect to outdoor hose bibbs, boiler or water heater drains, and lawn faucets. The gauges record up to 200 or 300 psi, depending on the model. They can be used to determine the need for a pressure reducing valve, find problems in the system, or simply determine the highest water pressure in the system. To see more temperature and pressure gauges, visit SupplyHouse.com.

Can PEX Tubing Freeze?

PEX tubing can expand and return to its original shape. This makes PEX more freeze-resistant than traditional rigid pipe, such as copper. Still, PEX is not freeze-proof. Freezing is a concern particularly when PEX is used for plumbing, as no glycol can be used for antifreeze. If water is allowed to freeze in the line, PEX can burst. When running it as an outdoor water line, PEX should be buried below the frost line. Insulation can guard against freezing as well (it’s also a must when running any hot water outdoors to prevent heat loss).

IFC Circulator Pumps

Flow-Checks prevent heat from moving into areas of a hydronic heating system that are not in need of heat at a given time. In the past, flow-checks had to be installed in-line, close to, but separate from circulator pumps. Today, many pumps include an integrated flow-check. Any Taco pump marked as ‘IFC’ contains an integral flow-check. Many Grundfos pumps contain a flow-check that can be easily removed if it’s not needed. Pumps with internal flow-checks speed up installations and minimize fittings in-line. They can be found on SupplyHouse.com, along with a huge selection of other heating supplies.

Zoning = Maximum Comfort

Uneven temperatures and cold areas throughout the house are common complaints homeowners make when asked about their heating systems. Zoning a heating system can solve this problem by breaking it into multiple areas, each controlled by an individual thermostat. It may be a necessity in large homes and spaces, because the temperatures in rooms located far away from the thermostat cannot be accurately monitored and maintained. Heating systems that are zoned provide the heat that is needed to maintain set temperature levels everywhere, leading to maximum comfort and efficiency.

Hydronic heating systems can be zoned either by circulator or by zone valve. Circulator-zoned systems have a separate circulator pump for each zone that only pushes water through a given zone when that zone calls for heat. Systems that are zoned by zone valve typically only use one circulator. Each zone’s valve opens when that zone needs heat (if it is a normally-closed valve). Forced-air heating systems zone with dampers that block air from moving to areas that don’t need heat. To find a large selection of zoning and heating products, visit SupplyHouse.com.

Vibration Pads for Less Noise

The anti-vibration pads available on PexSupply.com cut down on vibrations and noise from machines and equipment. Generally used with air conditioners, vibration pads are useful with many other types of household and industrial equipment, including washing machines. Rubber pads, like DiversiTech’s E.V.A. Anti-Vibration Pad, resist the damage that oil and other liquids can cause on cork pads. The E.V.A. pad comes in 2”, 3”, and 4” square sizes and withstands up to 50 psi.

Sump Pump Discharge Hose

All sump pumps require a discharge line, generally one that’s 1-1/4” or 1-1/2” in size. Little Giant’s Sump Pump Discharge Kits contain everything necessary to connect to the pump: 24’ corrugated polyethylene hose, an adapter, and a galvanized steel clamp. Visit PexSupply.com for more Little Giant products, including condensate pumps and complete assemblies.

DIY Baseboard Wall Brackets

The DIY Baseboard Heater covers available online exclusively at PexSupply.com resist rust and install easily.

Stop Unwanted Heat w/ Flow-Checks

Flow-Check valves prevent unwanted heat in closed-loop hydronic heating systems. In a single zone system, hot water can flow from the boiler at low rates even when there is no call for heat. If nothing stops the water’s path, the heated space may become unnecessarily warm. The same situation can arise in systems with multiple zones that are zoned by circulators rather than zone valves. Unchecked, heat can be thermosiphoned around the loop or into zones that are not calling for heat.

A flow-check valve installed close to the circulator(s) solves this problem. It’s a simple mechanical device that completely blocks flow in one direction and prevents flow in both directions when system pumps are not powered. Visit SupplyHouse.com for flow-check valves from Taco and Bell & Gossett.

Boiler Output Ratings

The amount of heat a boiler can produce is measured in British Thermal Units (BTUs). All boilers have a BTU input rating (the rate at which the burner consumes fuel) and a BTU output rating. Output BTUs heat the living space, while some input BTUs may be wasted (through venting, etc.). The closer the input and output ratings are to one another, the more efficient the boiler is.

Boiler manufacturers provide two separate output ratings: the DOE and the net I-B-R. DOE ratings assume that the boiler and its piping occupy a heated area. The heat lost through them, therefore, heats the space and helps offset the heating load. The I-B-R net output rating places the boiler in a unheated space, such as an unfinished basement. It assumes heat lost from the boiler and boiler piping is wasted. I-B-R ratings will always be lower than DOE ratings. Depending on the location of a boiler, either method may be more relevant when sizing and installing a boiler.

Heating & DHW in One Unit

Any boiler can heat domestic water if it is connected to an indirect water heater. Heated water from the boiler flows through a coil that ensures water from the heating system does not mix with potable water from the plumbing system.

The Triangle Tube Prestige Excellence performs both operations in a single unit. The Prestige Excellence is a high-efficiency boiler with output ratings around 80,000 BTU. Inside the wall-mounted unit, a 14-gallon indirect heater can produce close to 200 gallons of hot water per hour under normal conditions. It will save space and improve efficiency in any system powered by natural gas or propane.

Check Crimps w/ a Go-No-Go Gauge

A go-no-go gauge checks crimp fittings to ensure that they will not leak. The go-no-go gauge featured on SupplyHouse.com works with copper crimp rings ranging from 3/8” to 1”. Using a go-no-go gauge is easy. Just place the gauge on the ring. If the gauge does not fit around the ring or if it allows the ring to reach the bottom of its slot, the crimp was made improperly. Rings from successful crimp fittings should fit securely in the center of the gauge. Check out our Resource Center for more helpful tips and an instructional video on PEX crimping.

Home Run Systems for PEX Plumbing

In a PEX plumbing home run system, the line for each fixture comes directly from central hot and cold manifolds. The Viega MANABLOC combines the hot and cold manifolds into one unit. It is available at SupplyHouse.com with various distribution port combinations and either compression, crimp, or PEX press connections at the ports.

With home run distribution lines there is no need for any fittings between the manifold and the fixtures. Centrally located valves on the manifold can shut off water at any fixture. Hot and cold water arrives at faucets faster, and pressure is more stable when multiple fixtures run.

Energy Factor for Water Heaters

Energy Factor ratings allow homeowners and contractors to compare the efficiencies of different water heaters. A water heater that uses 62% of the energy it consumes has a .62 Energy Factor (EF). Standard gas-powered water heaters require an EF of at least .67 in order to have the chance to achieve Energy Star status. .82 is the minimum EF a tank-style gas or oil water heater must have in order to qualify for a U.S. tax credit in 2011.

EF ratings are not available for tank-style water heaters with BTU inputs over 75,000 BTUs (200,000 BTUs on tankless units). See the water heater section on SupplyHouse.com for units from A.O. Smith, Bradford White, and Takagi.

1 Ton = 12,000 BTUs

The British Thermal Unit (BTU) is the basis for sizing most heating and cooling sources. For heating, a certain number of BTUs will be necessary to heat a space to the desired indoor temperature based on outdoor conditions and the heat loss of the structure. In cooling systems, heat (measured in BTUs) must be removed from the space.

Equipment in cooling systems often lists BTUs in terms of tons. The translation is simple: 1 ton = 12,000 BTUs. A 3.5 ton air handler, for example, removes 42,000 BTUs of heat. For more heating and air conditioning products, visit SupplyHouse.com.

PEX-Pal Tubing Collector

Axiom’s PEX-Pal makes in-floor radiant heat installations easier and more organized. The heavy-duty tubing collector mounts to decking, rebar, ready-rod, and wooden forms. Positioned under the manifold, the PEX-Pal separates supply and return lines and does not allow PEX tubing that is 3/4” and smaller to bend beyond its minimum bend radius. The PEX-Pal also protects tubing at the point it penetrates concrete slabs. Shielding PEX in this area guards it against the effects of linear expansion. For more radiant heat products, visit SupplyHouse.com.

Downsides of Oversized Boilers

Oversizing a boiler or any other heat source is an all-too-common mistake. The logic behind it makes sense: after all, you will never get too cold if your heat source is more powerful than it needs to be. Plus, using rule-of-thumb methods saves the time needed to complete a full heat-loss assessment and get a BTU-load requirement. Simply basing the size of new equipment on the ratings of existing equipment may not give accurate figures either. The previous heat source may have been improperly sized, and changes may have been made to the structure since its installation.

Unfortunately there are some negative consequences that can result from selecting a heat source that is too large. For one, more powerful boilers cost more money. They will be louder and less efficient than properly-sized equipment. Fuel bills will be unnecessarily high, breakdowns will be more likely, and wide temperature swings could result from too much heat being created. Installing a boiler that is the right size for your particular home lets you avoid these problems. The comfort, efficiency, and cost-savings are well worth the extra effort.

Use the BTU Calculator at SupplyHouse.com to get an initial BTU load estimate.

What is a BTU?

If you have ever installed a heating system or even just picked out a boiler or air conditioner, you should be familiar with the term BTU. BTU stands for British Thermal Unit. One BTU equals roughly the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of a pound of water 1°F, equivalent to about 252 calories, 778 foot-pounds, or .3 of a watt-hour.

The number of BTUs needed to heat a space depends on several factors. In addition to square footage, climate and insulation quality play a major role. Use the BTU Calculator at SupplyHouse.com to get a good idea of how many BTUs you need to heat your home.

What are Grease Traps?

Grease traps prevent waste grease from entering municipal water systems. They save tax dollars and help the environment. Many localities require grease traps to be installed at restaurants and food service facilities – the places with the largest concentrations of waste grease. Grease traps keep drainage pipes in buildings clear and make water filtration more efficient. Generally installed in-line and underground, they store grease, oil, and fat while allowing remaining wastewater to flow into the sewer system.

Grease trap operation is very simple. The same basic design has been in use for over a century. Their purely mechanical function requires no power source. The fats and oils washed off restaurant equipment are less dense than water. Grease traps give wastewater enough time and space to allow grease to float to the top of the solution. This process filters out over 80% of grease from the mixture. SupplyHouse.com offers grease traps from Zurn and Canplas.

How to Size Pool Heat Exchangers

A heat exchanger for a swimming pool allows heat from the heat source (a boiler, etc.) to be transferred to the water in the pool. Since home heating is not typically necessary during swimming season, the heat source can be fully dedicated to warming the pool water.

Finding a properly-sized heat exchanger for a pool if not too difficult. Just find the capacity of the pool (length x width x depth x 7.5 for rectangular pools; diameter x diameter x depth x 5.9 for circular pools). Use the average depths for pools that do not have the same depth all the way around. Then, based on the pool’s capacity, consult the heat exchanger manufacturer’s literature to find the heat exchanger you need. The heat source involved in the application must be large enough to handle both the swimming pool’s heat load and the heat-loss to the surrounding area. Larger heat exchangers and heat sources are required when aiming for a 2°F (rather than 1°F) hourly heat-up rate. A 2°F/hour rate is recommended when the pool is only used periodically (weekends, holidays, etc). Visit SupplyHouse.com for swimming pool heat exchangers from FlatPlate and Triangle Tube.

Visit PexSupply.com to browse Fantech and Honeywell ventilators.

PEX-A, PEX-B, and PEX-C

There are three grades of PEX tubing: PEX-A, PEX-B, and PEX-C. All PEX tubing is made of cross-linked polyethylene. The grades refer to the various methods that manufacturers use when linking the polyethylene molecules.

PEX-A carries the highest grade. Cross-linking takes place while the polyethylene is melted, resulting in even cross-links throughout the tubing. This “Engel Method” makes PEX easier to work with and allows it to retain its shape better than PEX of the other grades. Only PEX-A tubing works with expansion-style fittings.

The Silane Method creates PEX-B tubing. In this method, cross-linking occurs in silicon and oxygen molecules, rather than carbon. PEX-C (the Irradiation Method) creates cross-links in the PEX similar to those found in PEX-A tubing, but not while the polyethylene is in its liquid form. Instead, beams of electrons cross-link the polyethylene after it has been shaped into tubing. This is the least common method of PEX manufacturing. See SupplyHouse.com for more information.

Sizing Plumbing Tees

Finding the right plumbing tee is an easy job for seasoned installers, but do-it-yourselfers may have second thoughts when looking for the one they need. Any tee (for copper, PEX, etc.) is sized by the nominal size of the piping. The nominal size of copper used for plumbing and heating is the pipe’s inside diameter.

A tee with only one listed size has the same dimensions at all three of its openings. For tees that have multiple-sized slots the two sides are listed first, followed by the opening between them. The larger of the two sides will always come first. See SupplyHouse.com for a complete selection of plumbing fittings.

PEX: Safe for Plumbing

PEX tubing for plumbing continues to become more popular. PEX is lightweight and flexible. Running the lines through tight spaces is easy, making PEX a great choice for retrofit applications.

PEX designed for plumbing (i.e. without an oxygen barrier) meets all necessary codes for potable water use. The materials in PEX tubing are chemically inert. They will not react with or contaminate water. Neither will fittings: all PEX fittings are mechanical, and do not use glues, chemicals, adhesives, or cements. Visit SupplyHouse.com for a full selection of PEX plumbing products.

Honeywell Products for Cleaner Air

Honeywell offers three styles of air filtration products: the media air cleaner, the electronic air cleaner, and the TrueCLEAN. SupplyHouse.com stocks all these systems, as well as replacement filters.

F100F and F200E Media Air Cleaners are Honeywell’s most basic models. They mount in the return air duct and require no electricity. Media filters strain larger particles, such as lint, before intercepting smaller particles that are jostled by random collisions with air molecules in the filters. The molecules cause diffusion in which the particles collide and stick to the filter, while filter-cleaned air circulates back into the home.

Honeywell’s Electronic Air Cleaners feature slightly more advanced technology. Their pre-filter screen traps large particles. Remaining particles are given a charge, rather than relying on natural charges (as Media filters do). Charged plates inside the unit attract the particles like magnets, before electrically-cleaned air passes through a post-filter and into the home.

TrueCLEAN, Honeywell’s newest and most advanced air filtration system, contains media filters with electronic enhancements - combining the best aspects of the older models. It captures dust and germs, and has been tested against flu and cold viruses. The system charges particles immediately (with an even charge). The interior media filter is continuously charged, which allows it to attract particles from all directions. This gives its MERV 15 filter the lifespan of a MERV 10 filter (i.e. fewer replacements). Finally, when powered, the TrueCLEAN destroys captured particles.

Tekmar Radiant Heat Thermostats

Tekmar offers high-quality thermostats for in-floor radiant heating. They can be used with the model 079 slab sensor for in-slab installations. The sensor's cord measures 10 feet in length. The Tekmar 518 thermostat is not programmable and does not come with the slab sensor. The 519 package includes the 518, plus the 079 slab sensor. Tekmar model 510 thermostats are programmable, and combine with the slab sensor to make up model 511 packages.

For radiant heating applications, since it can take some time for temperature levels to change within the room, programmable thermostats are not of the utmost importance. Due to the nature of radiant heating (i.e. heating surfaces rather than the air), a slab sensor gives the best indication of the comfort level those in the room actually experience. See SupplyHouse.com for more thermostats and radiant heating products.

PEX Crimp vs. PEX Clamp Fittings

PEX crimp and PEX clamp connections use the same fittings, but the rings and tools used to make these connections are different. It makes sense, then, that installers (especially those new to PEX) often wonder which method is better. Crimping and clamping are equally reliable. If the fitting is made properly, it will not leak. The choice between crimping and clamping should ultimately come down to a matter of preference and the tool that feels most comfortable.

That said, they are a few other factors to take into consideration. Clamp rings are stainless steel, making them more resistant to corrosion than copper crimp rings. This comes into play in direct burial applications, especially in areas with aggressive soil. Clamps also tend to be easier to remove, should the need arise. Crimp fittings, however, can be checked with a go-no-go gauge. The gauge allows the installer to see, immediately after making the fitting, whether or not he/she made the fitting properly. This can be crucial for do-it-yourselfers or those using the tool for the first time. For more information, visit the Resource Center at SupplyHouse.com.

Eliminate Drafts this Winter

During heating season, homes and buildings inevitably lose heat through ceilings, floors, windows, and doors. One major source of heat-loss is often overlooked: ducts. Unless a structure has a forced-air heating system, ducts used for central air conditioning are inactive during the winter. Ducts usually run through unheated attics. Since heat flows from hotter to colder areas, it travels through open vents and registers, into the ductwork, and out through the attic. This makes it more difficult to maintain set-point temperatures, and results in higher utility bills. Closed louvers do not create an air-tight seal, and heat will still infiltrate the vents.

Elima-Draft Vent/Register Covers solve this problem. The insulated plastic covers have a 6.0 R-value. They attach to aluminum vents and registers magnetically for easy placement and removal, year after year.

Quiet Ventilation Fans

The ventilation fans available on SupplyHouse.com, whether in-line or ceiling mounted, will not make much noise. New technology has allowed Panasonic, Broan-NuTone, and Fantech to offer fans that operate much more quietly than those from older installations. Many of Panasonic’s WhisperGreen, WhisperLite, and WhisperCeiling models are rated at less than 0.3 sones.

Sone ratings, much like decibel ratings, measure the loudness of a sound. They do so in relation to the hearing of an average person. One sone equals approximately 40 decibels, and an increase of one sone indicates that sound levels have doubled.

Heavy Duty Clamp Tool

PEX clamping uses the same fittings as PEX crimping, but different rings. The stainless steel clamp rings perform better outdoors and in direct burial applications than copper crimp rings do. The heavy duty clamp tool offered at SupplyHouse.com performs better for contractors and people who clamp frequently. The tool also cuts clamp rings off of PEX. Just push the silver pin down on both sides and insert the tool into the collar of the clamp ring.

BTUs and Kilowatt Hours

Depending on the utility rates in your area, an electric heat source may be the most cost-effective option to heat your home. With an electric heat source, the key number to keep in mind is that 1 kilowatt-hour (kWh) equals 3,413 BTUs. Since electrical providers charge by the kWh, you can use your BTU load to calculate a rough estimate of your seasonal heating costs. SupplyHouse.com offers electric boilers and water heaters.

Mini-Split AC Mounting

Ductless Mini-Split air conditioning systems consist of an outdoor unit connected to one or more indoor units. The outdoor unit can be secured to a concrete block or equipment pad on the ground, or mounted to the building with brackets. The unit should be placed in a well-ventilated area, away from exhaust coming from the building.

Wall-mounted indoor units function best when mounted high on the wall (at least 5 feet from the ground). This allows proper circulation of warm and cool air through the room. Installations closer to the floor also increase the likelihood of pet hair or other debris from the floor being sucked into the unit. See SupplyHouse.com for our new Mini-Split Sizing Calculator and mini-split products from Sanyo, LG, and Panasonic.

Indirect Water Heater Efficiency

Nowadays, seemingly all household products have some sort of efficiency rating associated with them. These ratings can allow products to achieve Energy Star status and help owners qualify for tax deductions and rebates from local utility companies. Plumbing and heating products, most notably boilers and water heaters, have efficiency ratings. It would make sense, then, that an indirect water heater (which is essentially a water heater tank attached to a boiler) would also have an efficiency rating. None of them do, however, because the boiler heats the water in the indirect tank. This means that an indirect water heater is only as efficient as the boiler connected to it.

Robertshaw I2 = More Options

Programmable thermostats allow users to stay comfortable with less effort and maximum efficiency. They save energy at night and during periods of the day when a building is not occupied, but ensure that desired temperature levels will be reached by the appointed time. Programmable thermostats generally have 4 daily programmable periods: wake up, leave for work, return home, and go to bed. These periods are completely modifiable, and can accommodate individuals who have unusual schedules. Most units allow different schedules for weekends.

The Robertshaw I2 Series of programmable thermostats gives the unique option of 6 programmable periods (also known as “events”) per day. Also configurable to 2 or the standard 4 periods, these thermostats make using a programmable thermostat even more flexible. In addition, these units feature a new Setup Wizard that makes installation a breeze. For more programmable thermostats and Robertshaw products, see SupplyHouse.com.

PEX Tubing and Gas Water Heaters

PEX tubing can be used with gas-powered water heaters, but it should not come within 18 inches of the flue. PEX can be damaged by the intense heat present near the gas flue. Hard, metallic pipe should be used for the first 18 inches. PEX water heater adapters, available for crimp/clamp or ProPEX connections, measure just over 18".

With electric water heaters, PEX can be attached directly to the unit. Keep in mind that local codes may have unique requirements that should always take precedence over the equipment manufacturer’s recommendations. For a full selection of water heaters from A.O. Smith and Bradford White, visit SupplyHouse.com.

PEX to PB Fittings

Polybutylene piping was common in the United States for a brief period starting in the 1970’s. The grey plastic tubing is still present in some installations from that time. In the event that polybutylene must be connected to PEX, fittings are available in limited sizes. SharkBite U4008LF and U4016LF fittings transition from PB to a traditional SharkBite fitting.

Keep in mind the standard PEX fittings, crimping tools, and rings do not work with polybutylene piping. For a larger selection of PEX fittings for plumbing visit SupplyHouse.com.

“The Future of Hot Water”

The A.O. Smith NEXT Hybrid High Efficiency Gas Water Heater aims to combine the best features of standard water heaters with those of tankless units. Conventional units have the advantage of a storage tank, but can run low on hot water during periods of extended usage. Tankless water heaters can produce hot water indefinitely, but their production capability can be exceeded when many showers or appliances run at the same time.

The 100,000 BTU NEXT Hybrid is essentially a tankless water heater with a 25-gallon storage tank, giving it an impressive 189 gallon first-hour delivery rating. It uses flue gas from its tankless unit to heat the extra storage water. This unit, billed as “the future of hot water,” features a display that allows users to turn the unit off, initiate energy savings or “boost” modes, and adjust the temperature setting. Visit SupplyHouse.com for more A.O. Smith products.

Linear Expansion of PEX Tubing

Everyone knows that materials expand when they are heated and contract when they get cold. Pipe runs of all standard piping materials, including copper, grow longer when the temperature of the water inside them rises. PEX expands about 10 times as much as copper, which can create relatively large differences in expansion over long runs.

To calculate the linear expansion of PEX tubing, keep in mind that PEX expands 1.1” per 10°F rise per 100 feet of PEX. For example, a 100 foot run of PEX will lengthen by 4.4” if the water temperature increases from 65°F to 105°F. This can cause problems at the point where PEX penetrates a concrete slab. Linear expansion may force PEX to rub against the concrete, and protecting the PEX with a sleeve in this area prevents wear on the tubing. PEX-AL-PEX expands less than standard PEX, and only slightly more than copper.

Fantech Dryer Lint Trap

Fantech’s Dryer Booster Fans reduce your dryer’s cycling time and can save you money on your energy bills. The fans accelerate the venting of warm, moist air on venting runs between 15 and 130 feet.

In many instances, it’s a good idea to use a lint trap in conjunction with a booster fan. Fantech’s DBLT4W lint trap fits 4” duct and contains a removable, cleanable filter. The trap is recommended when the ducting between the dryer and the booster fan runs less than 15 feet. Why? Because when you position the fan this close to the dryer, it may pull lint from the dryer. At greater distances, lint stays in the dryer and you do not need a trap. For information on Fantech products, visit SupplyHouse.com.

A Simple, “Easy to see” Thermostat

Honeywell’s thermostats have continually become more advanced since the classic T87 “Round” was introduced in 1953. Today, programmable thermostats with remote controls and high-definition touchscreens can control multiple devices wirelessly while displaying humidity levels and outdoor temperatures.

For those who want something simpler, Honeywell still offers more basic models. Their T87N1026 “Easy to see” mechanical thermostat is just one example. Perfect for users with poor vision, the unit features large numbers and clicks at every 2 degree change made to its set-point. See all of Honeywell’s thermostats, from the most basic to the most technologically advanced, on SupplyHouse.com.

Sizing Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless water heaters only produce hot water when you need it, and the supply will never run out – provided that you do not exceed the unit’s GPM capacity. There is a limit to the amount of hot water every tankless unit can produce in one minute. This gallons per minute (GPM) rating will be quite small for units designed to supply only a sink or two, but larger for whole-house heaters. The GPM rating fluctuates based on the “temperature rise” the unit needs to achieve. If the incoming water temperature is 50°F and the shower water must be 110°F, you have a 60°F temperature rise. The specification sheets for tankless heaters display a chart with the maximum flow rates across the spectrum of temperature rises.

At lower temperature rises, tankless water heaters can make more hot water. This means that it is easier to get more hot water during the summer or in warmer climates. Even in the coldest areas of the continental United States, incoming water temperatures do not fall much below 40°F. In warmer southern climates, average ground water temperatures hover close to 70°F. Keep this in mind as you browse the selection of tankless water heaters on SupplyHouse.com.

Connect PEX to Copper Fittings

As PEX tubing continues to become more commonplace in the plumbing and heating industries, it is often necessary to connect PEX to existing copper tubing. Since PEX and copper have the same outside diameters, SharkBite fittings make the task easy. Crimp/Clamp and ProPEX fittings can be soldered over copper pipes.

Some installations, however, may require a PEX connection directly to a copper fitting. Adapters that make this possible are also available for Crimp/Clamp and ProPEX PEX connections. They, too, must be soldered to the copper, but copper fitting adapters are placed inside the copper fitting, rather than over the copper pipe. On the copper side, fitting adapters have the same outside diameter as a copper pipe.

Maintaining your Mini-Split

Ductless mini-split air conditioners continue to grow in popularity in the United States. Their quiet, efficient operation and zoning capabilities make mini-splits an attractive option for home cooling. Like all air conditioning systems, mini-splits remove warm, humid air from the living space. They contain filters to absorb dust from this air and prevent the formation of mold and bacteria.

The cleaning of these filters is the primary routine maintenance that mini-split units require. Each unit's manual contains specific instructions, but in general the filters should be cleaned about once a month during peak summer usage. Manufacturers usually recommend vacuuming the dust from the filters and, if necessary, hand-washing them with mild detergent. Go to SupplyHouse.com for mini-split products from Panasonic and LG.

Outdoor Reset Controls

Boilers that are connected to an outdoor reset control operate more efficiently. An outdoor reset lowers the boiler’s water temperature as the outdoor temperature rises, and usually features warm-weather-shutdown capability. The increase in efficiency is a result of the lower operating temperature. Especially useful during the "shoulder months" of the spring and fall, it leads to less heat loss and fewer boiler cycles. Room temperatures fluctuate less.

The analogy of city vs. highway driving is often cited in association with outdoor resets. The starting and stopping of city driving (along with its lower gas efficiency) compares to a boiler without an outdoor reset. A boiler with an outdoor reset, meanwhile, operates at a constant temperature with less starting and stopping. It runs more efficiently, like a car on the highway.

Prestige Outdoor Sensor

The Wireless Outdoor Sensor is a key piece of Honeywell’s Prestige Comfort Systems. The sensor connects wirelessly to Prestige thermostats using Honeywell’s RedLINK technology. Two AA lithium batteries, which have a 4-5 year life, power it. The thermostat displays a 2-month low-battery warning when the sensor's batteries start to run low. The sensor automatically re-connects to the RedLINK network when new batteries are installed. It measures outdoor temperature and humidity, even allowing the Portable Comfort Control remote to display the current outdoor temperature.

A mounting bracket is included with the sensor. The unit should be placed away from direct sunlight and at least 6 inches below overhangs for the most accurate readings. The sensor simply acts as a transmitter. An unlimited number of thermostats within its range can pick up its signal. For more information on Prestige Comfort Systems, visit SupplyHouse.com.

PEX-AL-PEX Chamfering Tool

PEX-AL-PEX tubing contains a layer of aluminum embedded in the PEX. The aluminum serves as an oxygen barrier and allows the PEX to remain straighter. It also makes the tubing slightly thicker, so that standard crimp, clamp, or SharkBite fittings are not compatible. Compression or press fittings must be used with PEX-AL-PEX.

To prepare PEX-AL-PEX tubing for a fitting, a chamfering tool should be used. The tool reams the inside of the tubing, cleaning it and creating a beveled edge so that the fitting’s o-ring can set properly. For more information on PEX-AL-PEX products, visit SupplyHouse.com.
