Downsides of Oversized Boilers

Oversizing a boiler or any other heat source is an all-too-common mistake. The logic behind it makes sense: after all, you will never get too cold if your heat source is more powerful than it needs to be. Plus, using rule-of-thumb methods saves the time needed to complete a full heat-loss assessment and get a BTU-load requirement. Simply basing the size of new equipment on the ratings of existing equipment may not give accurate figures either. The previous heat source may have been improperly sized, and changes may have been made to the structure since its installation.

Unfortunately there are some negative consequences that can result from selecting a heat source that is too large. For one, more powerful boilers cost more money. They will be louder and less efficient than properly-sized equipment. Fuel bills will be unnecessarily high, breakdowns will be more likely, and wide temperature swings could result from too much heat being created. Installing a boiler that is the right size for your particular home lets you avoid these problems. The comfort, efficiency, and cost-savings are well worth the extra effort.

Use the BTU Calculator at SupplyHouse.com to get an initial BTU load estimate.

What is a BTU?

If you have ever installed a heating system or even just picked out a boiler or air conditioner, you should be familiar with the term BTU. BTU stands for British Thermal Unit. One BTU equals roughly the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of a pound of water 1°F, equivalent to about 252 calories, 778 foot-pounds, or .3 of a watt-hour.

The number of BTUs needed to heat a space depends on several factors. In addition to square footage, climate and insulation quality play a major role. Use the BTU Calculator at SupplyHouse.com to get a good idea of how many BTUs you need to heat your home.

What are Grease Traps?

Grease traps prevent waste grease from entering municipal water systems. They save tax dollars and help the environment. Many localities require grease traps to be installed at restaurants and food service facilities – the places with the largest concentrations of waste grease. Grease traps keep drainage pipes in buildings clear and make water filtration more efficient. Generally installed in-line and underground, they store grease, oil, and fat while allowing remaining wastewater to flow into the sewer system.

Grease trap operation is very simple. The same basic design has been in use for over a century. Their purely mechanical function requires no power source. The fats and oils washed off restaurant equipment are less dense than water. Grease traps give wastewater enough time and space to allow grease to float to the top of the solution. This process filters out over 80% of grease from the mixture. SupplyHouse.com offers grease traps from Zurn and Canplas.

How to Size Pool Heat Exchangers

A heat exchanger for a swimming pool allows heat from the heat source (a boiler, etc.) to be transferred to the water in the pool. Since home heating is not typically necessary during swimming season, the heat source can be fully dedicated to warming the pool water.

Finding a properly-sized heat exchanger for a pool if not too difficult. Just find the capacity of the pool (length x width x depth x 7.5 for rectangular pools; diameter x diameter x depth x 5.9 for circular pools). Use the average depths for pools that do not have the same depth all the way around. Then, based on the pool’s capacity, consult the heat exchanger manufacturer’s literature to find the heat exchanger you need. The heat source involved in the application must be large enough to handle both the swimming pool’s heat load and the heat-loss to the surrounding area. Larger heat exchangers and heat sources are required when aiming for a 2°F (rather than 1°F) hourly heat-up rate. A 2°F/hour rate is recommended when the pool is only used periodically (weekends, holidays, etc). Visit SupplyHouse.com for swimming pool heat exchangers from FlatPlate and Triangle Tube.

Air Ventilators: ERV vs. HRV

Air ventilators improve indoor air quality, maximizing clean and healthy air while minimizing contaminants and moisture. There are two types of in-line ventilators: Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs) and Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRVs). Both contain a supply and exhaust motor in one unit, bringing in fresh air from outside and pulling stale air from the living space. The unit’s recovery core ensures incoming air is not too cold during the winter or too warm in the summer.

The core in an ERV unit transfers heat and moisture to outgoing air, making ERVs perfect for the warm and dry Southeastern United States. They clean air and reduce the load on air conditioners.

HRVs are recommended in all cold climates, in addition to warm areas that are dry. They bring in an amount of air equal to that which they exhaust, transferring heat from warmer to colder air. HRVs also use defrost protection that allows year-round operation. Visit PexSupply.com to browse Fantech and Honeywell ventilators.

PEX-A, PEX-B, and PEX-C

There are three grades of PEX tubing: PEX-A, PEX-B, and PEX-C. All PEX tubing is made of cross-linked polyethylene. The grades refer to the various methods that manufacturers use when linking the polyethylene molecules.

PEX-A carries the highest grade. Cross-linking takes place while the polyethylene is melted, resulting in even cross-links throughout the tubing. This “Engel Method” makes PEX easier to work with and allows it to retain its shape better than PEX of the other grades. Only PEX-A tubing works with expansion-style fittings.

The Silane Method creates PEX-B tubing. In this method, cross-linking occurs in silicon and oxygen molecules, rather than carbon. PEX-C (the Irradiation Method) creates cross-links in the PEX similar to those found in PEX-A tubing, but not while the polyethylene is in its liquid form. Instead, beams of electrons cross-link the polyethylene after it has been shaped into tubing. This is the least common method of PEX manufacturing. See SupplyHouse.com for more information.

Sizing Plumbing Tees

Finding the right plumbing tee is an easy job for seasoned installers, but do-it-yourselfers may have second thoughts when looking for the one they need. Any tee (for copper, PEX, etc.) is sized by the nominal size of the piping. The nominal size of copper used for plumbing and heating is the pipe’s inside diameter.

A tee with only one listed size has the same dimensions at all three of its openings. For tees that have multiple-sized slots the two sides are listed first, followed by the opening between them. The larger of the two sides will always come first. See SupplyHouse.com for a complete selection of plumbing fittings.

PEX: Safe for Plumbing

PEX tubing for plumbing continues to become more popular. PEX is lightweight and flexible. Running the lines through tight spaces is easy, making PEX a great choice for retrofit applications.

PEX designed for plumbing (i.e. without an oxygen barrier) meets all necessary codes for potable water use. The materials in PEX tubing are chemically inert. They will not react with or contaminate water. Neither will fittings: all PEX fittings are mechanical, and do not use glues, chemicals, adhesives, or cements. Visit SupplyHouse.com for a full selection of PEX plumbing products.

Honeywell Products for Cleaner Air

Honeywell offers three styles of air filtration products: the media air cleaner, the electronic air cleaner, and the TrueCLEAN. SupplyHouse.com stocks all these systems, as well as replacement filters.

F100F and F200E Media Air Cleaners are Honeywell’s most basic models. They mount in the return air duct and require no electricity. Media filters strain larger particles, such as lint, before intercepting smaller particles that are jostled by random collisions with air molecules in the filters. The molecules cause diffusion in which the particles collide and stick to the filter, while filter-cleaned air circulates back into the home.

Honeywell’s Electronic Air Cleaners feature slightly more advanced technology. Their pre-filter screen traps large particles. Remaining particles are given a charge, rather than relying on natural charges (as Media filters do). Charged plates inside the unit attract the particles like magnets, before electrically-cleaned air passes through a post-filter and into the home.

TrueCLEAN, Honeywell’s newest and most advanced air filtration system, contains media filters with electronic enhancements - combining the best aspects of the older models. It captures dust and germs, and has been tested against flu and cold viruses. The system charges particles immediately (with an even charge). The interior media filter is continuously charged, which allows it to attract particles from all directions. This gives its MERV 15 filter the lifespan of a MERV 10 filter (i.e. fewer replacements). Finally, when powered, the TrueCLEAN destroys captured particles.

Tekmar Radiant Heat Thermostats

Tekmar offers high-quality thermostats for in-floor radiant heating. They can be used with the model 079 slab sensor for in-slab installations. The sensor's cord measures 10 feet in length. The Tekmar 518 thermostat is not programmable and does not come with the slab sensor. The 519 package includes the 518, plus the 079 slab sensor. Tekmar model 510 thermostats are programmable, and combine with the slab sensor to make up model 511 packages.

For radiant heating applications, since it can take some time for temperature levels to change within the room, programmable thermostats are not of the utmost importance. Due to the nature of radiant heating (i.e. heating surfaces rather than the air), a slab sensor gives the best indication of the comfort level those in the room actually experience. See SupplyHouse.com for more thermostats and radiant heating products.

PEX Crimp vs. PEX Clamp Fittings

PEX crimp and PEX clamp connections use the same fittings, but the rings and tools used to make these connections are different. It makes sense, then, that installers (especially those new to PEX) often wonder which method is better. Crimping and clamping are equally reliable. If the fitting is made properly, it will not leak. The choice between crimping and clamping should ultimately come down to a matter of preference and the tool that feels most comfortable.

That said, they are a few other factors to take into consideration. Clamp rings are stainless steel, making them more resistant to corrosion than copper crimp rings. This comes into play in direct burial applications, especially in areas with aggressive soil. Clamps also tend to be easier to remove, should the need arise. Crimp fittings, however, can be checked with a go-no-go gauge. The gauge allows the installer to see, immediately after making the fitting, whether or not he/she made the fitting properly. This can be crucial for do-it-yourselfers or those using the tool for the first time. For more information, visit the Resource Center at SupplyHouse.com.

Eliminate Drafts this Winter

During heating season, homes and buildings inevitably lose heat through ceilings, floors, windows, and doors. One major source of heat-loss is often overlooked: ducts. Unless a structure has a forced-air heating system, ducts used for central air conditioning are inactive during the winter. Ducts usually run through unheated attics. Since heat flows from hotter to colder areas, it travels through open vents and registers, into the ductwork, and out through the attic. This makes it more difficult to maintain set-point temperatures, and results in higher utility bills. Closed louvers do not create an air-tight seal, and heat will still infiltrate the vents.

Elima-Draft Vent/Register Covers solve this problem. The insulated plastic covers have a 6.0 R-value. They attach to aluminum vents and registers magnetically for easy placement and removal, year after year.

Quiet Ventilation Fans

The ventilation fans available on SupplyHouse.com, whether in-line or ceiling mounted, will not make much noise. New technology has allowed Panasonic, Broan-NuTone, and Fantech to offer fans that operate much more quietly than those from older installations. Many of Panasonic’s WhisperGreen, WhisperLite, and WhisperCeiling models are rated at less than 0.3 sones.

Sone ratings, much like decibel ratings, measure the loudness of a sound. They do so in relation to the hearing of an average person. One sone equals approximately 40 decibels, and an increase of one sone indicates that sound levels have doubled.

Heavy Duty Clamp Tool

PEX clamping uses the same fittings as PEX crimping, but different rings. The stainless steel clamp rings perform better outdoors and in direct burial applications than copper crimp rings do. The heavy duty clamp tool offered at SupplyHouse.com performs better for contractors and people who clamp frequently. The tool also cuts clamp rings off of PEX. Just push the silver pin down on both sides and insert the tool into the collar of the clamp ring.

BTUs and Kilowatt Hours

Depending on the utility rates in your area, an electric heat source may be the most cost-effective option to heat your home. With an electric heat source, the key number to keep in mind is that 1 kilowatt-hour (kWh) equals 3,413 BTUs. Since electrical providers charge by the kWh, you can use your BTU load to calculate a rough estimate of your seasonal heating costs. SupplyHouse.com offers electric boilers and water heaters.

Mini-Split AC Mounting

Ductless Mini-Split air conditioning systems consist of an outdoor unit connected to one or more indoor units. The outdoor unit can be secured to a concrete block or equipment pad on the ground, or mounted to the building with brackets. The unit should be placed in a well-ventilated area, away from exhaust coming from the building.

Wall-mounted indoor units function best when mounted high on the wall (at least 5 feet from the ground). This allows proper circulation of warm and cool air through the room. Installations closer to the floor also increase the likelihood of pet hair or other debris from the floor being sucked into the unit. See SupplyHouse.com for our new Mini-Split Sizing Calculator and mini-split products from Sanyo, LG, and Panasonic.

Indirect Water Heater Efficiency

Nowadays, seemingly all household products have some sort of efficiency rating associated with them. These ratings can allow products to achieve Energy Star status and help owners qualify for tax deductions and rebates from local utility companies. Plumbing and heating products, most notably boilers and water heaters, have efficiency ratings. It would make sense, then, that an indirect water heater (which is essentially a water heater tank attached to a boiler) would also have an efficiency rating. None of them do, however, because the boiler heats the water in the indirect tank. This means that an indirect water heater is only as efficient as the boiler connected to it.

Robertshaw I2 = More Options

Programmable thermostats allow users to stay comfortable with less effort and maximum efficiency. They save energy at night and during periods of the day when a building is not occupied, but ensure that desired temperature levels will be reached by the appointed time. Programmable thermostats generally have 4 daily programmable periods: wake up, leave for work, return home, and go to bed. These periods are completely modifiable, and can accommodate individuals who have unusual schedules. Most units allow different schedules for weekends.

The Robertshaw I2 Series of programmable thermostats gives the unique option of 6 programmable periods (also known as “events”) per day. Also configurable to 2 or the standard 4 periods, these thermostats make using a programmable thermostat even more flexible. In addition, these units feature a new Setup Wizard that makes installation a breeze. For more programmable thermostats and Robertshaw products, see SupplyHouse.com.

PEX Tubing and Gas Water Heaters

PEX tubing can be used with gas-powered water heaters, but it should not come within 18 inches of the flue. PEX can be damaged by the intense heat present near the gas flue. Hard, metallic pipe should be used for the first 18 inches. PEX water heater adapters, available for crimp/clamp or ProPEX connections, measure just over 18".

With electric water heaters, PEX can be attached directly to the unit. Keep in mind that local codes may have unique requirements that should always take precedence over the equipment manufacturer’s recommendations. For a full selection of water heaters from A.O. Smith and Bradford White, visit SupplyHouse.com.

PEX to PB Fittings

Polybutylene piping was common in the United States for a brief period starting in the 1970’s. The grey plastic tubing is still present in some installations from that time. In the event that polybutylene must be connected to PEX, fittings are available in limited sizes. SharkBite U4008LF and U4016LF fittings transition from PB to a traditional SharkBite fitting.

Keep in mind the standard PEX fittings, crimping tools, and rings do not work with polybutylene piping. For a larger selection of PEX fittings for plumbing visit SupplyHouse.com.

“The Future of Hot Water”

The A.O. Smith NEXT Hybrid High Efficiency Gas Water Heater aims to combine the best features of standard water heaters with those of tankless units. Conventional units have the advantage of a storage tank, but can run low on hot water during periods of extended usage. Tankless water heaters can produce hot water indefinitely, but their production capability can be exceeded when many showers or appliances run at the same time.

The 100,000 BTU NEXT Hybrid is essentially a tankless water heater with a 25-gallon storage tank, giving it an impressive 189 gallon first-hour delivery rating. It uses flue gas from its tankless unit to heat the extra storage water. This unit, billed as “the future of hot water,” features a display that allows users to turn the unit off, initiate energy savings or “boost” modes, and adjust the temperature setting. Visit SupplyHouse.com for more A.O. Smith products.

Linear Expansion of PEX Tubing

Everyone knows that materials expand when they are heated and contract when they get cold. Pipe runs of all standard piping materials, including copper, grow longer when the temperature of the water inside them rises. PEX expands about 10 times as much as copper, which can create relatively large differences in expansion over long runs.

To calculate the linear expansion of PEX tubing, keep in mind that PEX expands 1.1” per 10°F rise per 100 feet of PEX. For example, a 100 foot run of PEX will lengthen by 4.4” if the water temperature increases from 65°F to 105°F. This can cause problems at the point where PEX penetrates a concrete slab. Linear expansion may force PEX to rub against the concrete, and protecting the PEX with a sleeve in this area prevents wear on the tubing. PEX-AL-PEX expands less than standard PEX, and only slightly more than copper.

Fantech Dryer Lint Trap

Fantech’s Dryer Booster Fans reduce your dryer’s cycling time and can save you money on your energy bills. The fans accelerate the venting of warm, moist air on venting runs between 15 and 130 feet.

In many instances, it’s a good idea to use a lint trap in conjunction with a booster fan. Fantech’s DBLT4W lint trap fits 4” duct and contains a removable, cleanable filter. The trap is recommended when the ducting between the dryer and the booster fan runs less than 15 feet. Why? Because when you position the fan this close to the dryer, it may pull lint from the dryer. At greater distances, lint stays in the dryer and you do not need a trap. For information on Fantech products, visit SupplyHouse.com.

A Simple, “Easy to see” Thermostat

Honeywell’s thermostats have continually become more advanced since the classic T87 “Round” was introduced in 1953. Today, programmable thermostats with remote controls and high-definition touchscreens can control multiple devices wirelessly while displaying humidity levels and outdoor temperatures.

For those who want something simpler, Honeywell still offers more basic models. Their T87N1026 “Easy to see” mechanical thermostat is just one example. Perfect for users with poor vision, the unit features large numbers and clicks at every 2 degree change made to its set-point. See all of Honeywell’s thermostats, from the most basic to the most technologically advanced, on SupplyHouse.com.

Sizing Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless water heaters only produce hot water when you need it, and the supply will never run out – provided that you do not exceed the unit’s GPM capacity. There is a limit to the amount of hot water every tankless unit can produce in one minute. This gallons per minute (GPM) rating will be quite small for units designed to supply only a sink or two, but larger for whole-house heaters. The GPM rating fluctuates based on the “temperature rise” the unit needs to achieve. If the incoming water temperature is 50°F and the shower water must be 110°F, you have a 60°F temperature rise. The specification sheets for tankless heaters display a chart with the maximum flow rates across the spectrum of temperature rises.

At lower temperature rises, tankless water heaters can make more hot water. This means that it is easier to get more hot water during the summer or in warmer climates. Even in the coldest areas of the continental United States, incoming water temperatures do not fall much below 40°F. In warmer southern climates, average ground water temperatures hover close to 70°F. Keep this in mind as you browse the selection of tankless water heaters on SupplyHouse.com.

Connect PEX to Copper Fittings

As PEX tubing continues to become more commonplace in the plumbing and heating industries, it is often necessary to connect PEX to existing copper tubing. Since PEX and copper have the same outside diameters, SharkBite fittings make the task easy. Crimp/Clamp and ProPEX fittings can be soldered over copper pipes.

Some installations, however, may require a PEX connection directly to a copper fitting. Adapters that make this possible are also available for Crimp/Clamp and ProPEX PEX connections. They, too, must be soldered to the copper, but copper fitting adapters are placed inside the copper fitting, rather than over the copper pipe. On the copper side, fitting adapters have the same outside diameter as a copper pipe.

Maintaining your Mini-Split

Ductless mini-split air conditioners continue to grow in popularity in the United States. Their quiet, efficient operation and zoning capabilities make mini-splits an attractive option for home cooling. Like all air conditioning systems, mini-splits remove warm, humid air from the living space. They contain filters to absorb dust from this air and prevent the formation of mold and bacteria.

The cleaning of these filters is the primary routine maintenance that mini-split units require. Each unit's manual contains specific instructions, but in general the filters should be cleaned about once a month during peak summer usage. Manufacturers usually recommend vacuuming the dust from the filters and, if necessary, hand-washing them with mild detergent. Go to SupplyHouse.com for mini-split products from Panasonic and LG.

Outdoor Reset Controls

Boilers that are connected to an outdoor reset control operate more efficiently. An outdoor reset lowers the boiler’s water temperature as the outdoor temperature rises, and usually features warm-weather-shutdown capability. The increase in efficiency is a result of the lower operating temperature. Especially useful during the "shoulder months" of the spring and fall, it leads to less heat loss and fewer boiler cycles. Room temperatures fluctuate less.

The analogy of city vs. highway driving is often cited in association with outdoor resets. The starting and stopping of city driving (along with its lower gas efficiency) compares to a boiler without an outdoor reset. A boiler with an outdoor reset, meanwhile, operates at a constant temperature with less starting and stopping. It runs more efficiently, like a car on the highway.

Prestige Outdoor Sensor

The Wireless Outdoor Sensor is a key piece of Honeywell’s Prestige Comfort Systems. The sensor connects wirelessly to Prestige thermostats using Honeywell’s RedLINK technology. Two AA lithium batteries, which have a 4-5 year life, power it. The thermostat displays a 2-month low-battery warning when the sensor's batteries start to run low. The sensor automatically re-connects to the RedLINK network when new batteries are installed. It measures outdoor temperature and humidity, even allowing the Portable Comfort Control remote to display the current outdoor temperature.

A mounting bracket is included with the sensor. The unit should be placed away from direct sunlight and at least 6 inches below overhangs for the most accurate readings. The sensor simply acts as a transmitter. An unlimited number of thermostats within its range can pick up its signal. For more information on Prestige Comfort Systems, visit SupplyHouse.com.

PEX-AL-PEX Chamfering Tool

PEX-AL-PEX tubing contains a layer of aluminum embedded in the PEX. The aluminum serves as an oxygen barrier and allows the PEX to remain straighter. It also makes the tubing slightly thicker, so that standard crimp, clamp, or SharkBite fittings are not compatible. Compression or press fittings must be used with PEX-AL-PEX.

To prepare PEX-AL-PEX tubing for a fitting, a chamfering tool should be used. The tool reams the inside of the tubing, cleaning it and creating a beveled edge so that the fitting’s o-ring can set properly. For more information on PEX-AL-PEX products, visit SupplyHouse.com.

Fan-Mounting Options

There are many possibilities for mounting bathroom ventilation fans. To replace an older unit the simplest solution may be a retrofit kit, available for most Broan and NuTone models. These kits include a new motor and grille, allowing users to improve operation while keeping their present ducting.

For new installations, ceiling fans generally go between ceiling joists. They are connected directly to venting ductwork. Inline fans can be mounted in an attic, and have the ability connect to grille housings in more than one bathroom. Wall-mount fans present another option. With the fan on an exterior wall, they connect to the grille housing located above the bathroom. SupplyHouse.com stocks bath fans from Fantech, Panasonic, and Broan-NuTone.

Your Body Gives off Heat

When sizing air conditioning equipment, square footage is not the only relevant factor. Climate, insulation quality, and room functions (i.e. kitchens with heat-producing appliances) must also be taken into account. Another important consideration may not seem as obvious: number of occupants. The body of an average adult gives off between 400 and 500 BTUs of heat per hour, a figure that increases during periods of exercise or strenuous activity. This helps during heating season, but can make it more difficult to cool down a crowded room on a hot day. Visit SupplyHouse.com for our full selection of air conditioning and mini-split products.

Why an Oxygen Barrier is Necessary

PEX tubing with an oxygen barrier should be installed in any closed-loop system. New water is not routinely introduced to closed systems. The same water cycles through them continuously.

Since water contains oxygen, people often ask us why the barrier is needed. The answer starts with oxygen itself. Oxygen corrodes ferrous metals. Any system components made of iron or steel (such as a cast iron circulator pump) will rust over time if oxygen is in the system. The oxygen initially present in the water chemically reacts with ferrous equipment to form iron oxide. Once this takes place, all corrosion stops. This type of mixture, which no longer contains oxygen, is ideal for closed systems.

PEX without an oxygen barrier actually allows oxygen from the air to permeate it. This happens even if the tubing is buried in concrete. Standard pumps will rust when oxygen is present in the water. Bronze or stainless steel pumps are necessary when this is the case.

Lead-Free ProPEX Fittings

Uponor's ProPEX fittings have always set the industry standard for performance and reliability. Compatible only with PEX-A, they take advantage of the tubing’s uniform molecular structure that allows it to return to its original shape. To make a ProPEX fitting, you must expand the tubing (and an appropriately sized ring) with a proper tool. Then simply slide the fitting into the PEX and watch it shrink back to size, making a leak-proof seal almost instantly.

ProPEX fittings are now exclusively lead-free. “LF” fittings exceed United States Safe Drinking Water Act standards and are authorized for use in California and Vermont. They are approved for direct burial in soil and concrete slabs. When used with other Uponor products, they create a completely lead-free plumbing system, from inlet to faucet.

Uponor’s Engineered Plastic (EP) fittings provide another lead-free option for ProPEX systems. Available in a wide-variety of sizes, these fittings are also approved for direct burial in soil and concrete slabs. Their high-performance thermoplastic material meets the same ratings as Uponor’s tubing. Red brass and dezincification-resistant (DZR) fittings are produced in select sizes.

Maintaining Proper Humidity

The ideal indoor relative humidity ranges between 40% and 60% most of the year and 35% during heating season. Unless you live along the West Coast, there is a good chance you will need humidification products to reach these levels. Over the last two decades, tighter home insulation and increased awareness of health conditions such as allergies and asthma have led to a surge in indoor air quality products. If you live in a home that is too dry during the winter, you may develop uncomfortable dryness and cracking in the nasal membrane, lips, and skin. Additionally, dry air feels cooler and can cause higher heating costs. Too much humidity, on the other hand, can lead to the formation of mold, mildew, and dust mites.

The solution may be a TrueSTEAM humidifier or TrueDRY dehumidifier from Honeywell, which are available at SupplyHouse.com.

SharkBite Connections Made Even Easier

Cash Acme’s SharkBite fittings are popular because they require no tools for installation. Compatible with PEX, copper, and CPVC, the fittings allow secure connections to be simple. There is one tool, however, that can make working with SharkBite fittings even easier: a Safe Seal Deburring and Depth Gauge Tool. This compact device can deburr copper tubing to ensure it is clean prior to inserting it into the SharkBite fitting.

More importantly, the tool gives the proper depth to which the pipe should be placed in the fitting. The tool has 6 tube sizes (1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8', 3/4" and 1"). To find the proper depth, simply slide the tubing into the correct slot and draw a line on the tubing where the gauge ends. When installation is complete, the mark should be within 0.005” of the fitting’s release collar. Visit SupplyHouse.com for more Cash Acme products.

Save Energy with Indirect Water Heaters

Indirect water heaters take advantage of your boiler to produce domestic hot water efficiently. The idea is simple: hot water from the boiler flows through a coil in a water tank, thus heating the surrounding water. The boiler water and domestic water never touch or mix together.

Indirect water heaters do not have efficiency ratings of their own (they are only as efficient as the boilers they work with), but they do not require a separate energy source for domestic water heating. In most setups, the indirect tank will have priority over calls for heat. As a result, no additional BTUs are required on the boiler's rating. SupplyHouse.com offers high-quality indirect tanks from manufacturers including Weil McLain, Bradford White, Amtrol, and Triangle Tube.

TrueZONE Panels Take the Heat

The four different models of Honeywell’s TrueZONE zoning panels serve one primary purpose: to make zoning easier. With a simplified installer set-up, HZ322 and HZ432 models communicate with thermostats wirelessly using Honeywell’s RedLINK technology. This reduces the number of wires in the living space. TrueZONE panels can accommodate between 2 and 4 zones, and the HZ432 is expandable up to 32 zones. The compact panels all measure 8” wide. Originally designed to withstand 150 °F temperatures for attic installations in warm climates, current TrueZONE panels can handle temperatures up to 165 °F. Visit SupplyHouse.com for the full selection of Honeywell zoning products.

Always Check the Pump Curve

Variable speed circulator pumps usually have three settings on which they can operate. This means they will have three different pump curves and can be used for a larger range of applications. Variable speed pumps are advertised, rightfully so, as an inventory reducer – meaning that contractors can carry them on their truck to use in a variety of jobs.

This is true, but we would advise a certain amount of caution. The three curves on a variable speed pump are almost always very similar: one central curve with the others slightly above and slightly below it. If an application calls for a flat-curved pump (high flow, low head), then a steep-curved variable speed circulator (low flow, high head) will not work – regardless of the setting. SupplyHouse.com stocks variable speed pumps from Taco, Grundfos, Bell & Gossett, and Wilo.

Get a Cleaner Look on Your Venting

Concentric vent kits allow more efficient gas venting. Installed at the end of vent runs on gas boilers or water heaters, they require just a single hole from the house. The design lets intake air flow through the same outdoor protrusion through which waste is vented. With a dual-PVC-connection Y-fitting on the indoor side, the kit permits combustion air to enter under a rain cap with vented air flowing through the same device. Kits also include a bird screen to prevent debris from entering the system. For a cleaner appearance and installation, look no further than a concentric vent kit from SupplyHouse.com.

Baseboard Heater Cover Safety

All baseboard covers will get hot. This cannot be avoided without disrupting the efficient flow of heat to the room. Baseboard covers generally feel hot to the touch, but not hot enough to cause burns or significant injury.

A baseboard’s heating element presents the biggest danger for small children, whose hands can fit inside the gaps on standard baseboard covers. DIY Baseboard Heater Covers, available online exclusively at SupplyHouse.com, solve this problem. These attractive, easy-to-install covers completely block access to the heating element, making them a safer alternative to traditional baseboard covers.

Standard ID & OD for Standard PEX

If you are aware of all the brands and varieties of PEX tubing that are available, you may wonder whether there are any differences in the wall thicknesses, inside diameters, or outside diameters of the PEX. All standard PEX tubing sold at SupplyHouse.com of any particular size will be identical in these specifications (regardless of brand and the presence of an oxygen barrier). 1/2" PEX, for example, has a .475” inside diameter and a .625” outside diameter.

The only exception is PEX-AL-PEX tubing. PEX-AL-PEX contains an embedded layer of aluminum that thickens it slightly. It also has a larger inside diameter and outside diameter, making PEX-AL-PEX incompatible with standard PEX fittings. With PEX-AL-PEX, you must use either compression or Multipress fittings.

John Guest Pipe Inserts

Push-Fit Fittings from John Guest require no tools for installation or removal, making them an excellent choice for one-time jobs. Plastic Twist & Lock Speedfit Fittings are lead-free and perfect for use with potable water.

The manufacturer requires the installation of Pipe Inserts with Push-Fit Fittings used on PEX tubing in hydronic heating systems. They recommend Pipe Inserts for PEX plumbing systems. Hot water can cause a gradual loosening of the fitting’s teeth that secure it to the tubing. Pipe Inserts, available at SupplyHouse.com in 1/2", 3/4", and 1” sizes, prevent this from happening and ensure that your John Guest fitting will remain leak-free.

Vertical Flanges for Tight Spaces

Most circulator pumps connect to a system’s piping with flanges (union and threaded options exist for some models). Standard pumps use standard-sized flanges. The pipe size of the flanges must be selected based on the piping to which they will be attached.

Generally, flanges run parallel to the pump’s casing. In certain instances, this may create spacing issues in the boiler room. The solution is a vertical flange pump. Also known as rotated or inverted flange, these pumps have flange connections that run perpendicular to the motor casing. The flanges that bolt on vertical flange pumps are the same; they just face in a different direction because of the configuration of the pump. One popular vertical flange pump is the Taco 0015-MSF2-1IFC. SupplyHouse.com stocks a wide range of circulator pumps from Taco, Bell & Gossett, Grundfos, and Wilo.

Outside Diameter of PEX Tubing

PEX tubing is designed to replace copper with maximum ease. This is why PEX of any given size has the same outside diameter as copper of the same size. PEX's inside diameter, however, is smaller because PEX is thicker than copper. Any flow lost by the smaller inside diameter can be made up for by the fewer bends and elbows in PEX systems. PEX tubing is perfect for retrofit designs. It’s easy to run and can fit in tight spaces. PEX tubing and copper tubing with the same nominal size can fit into the same SharkBite fittings.

Energy from the Ground

Whether snow is falling or it is the hottest day of the summer, the earth’s temperature remains the same. Geothermal technology takes advantage of this situation to provide clean and renewable energy. Temperature readings several feet into the earth hover near 50 °F. Residential geothermal systems can use this energy to heat or to cool your house, circulating water that flows through pipes buried deep in the ground. Geothermal systems do not release waste gases to the environment and you will no longer need to pay a fluctuating monthly fuel bill to heat your home. You can find geothermal pumps and valves at SupplyHouse.com.

Holiday Thermostat Schedules

Programmable Thermostats give you the ability to set daily schedules tailored to your lifestyle. They provide maximum convenience and can result in big savings whether installed in a home or place of business. In a typical residence, you can set a programmable thermostat to adjust room temperatures based on the time of day and day of the week. Generally, programmable thermostats have 4 daily periods in which different settings can be made. This lets you program desired temperatures based on your family's work and sleep schedules. Programmable thermostats guarantee that you will save energy when no one is home and feel comfort immediately upon returning home.

Programmable thermostats work on several weekly schedules. 7-day models can only accommodate the same schedule for every day of the week. 5-2 units accept one schedule for weekdays and another one for weekends, while 5-1-1 programmable thermostats allow Saturday's schedule to differ from Sunday's. On days that you must deviate from your normal routine, you can simply turn off the programming schedule and control the thermostat manually. Many programmable thermostats give users the ability to store temporary holiday schedules - perfect for long weekends. SupplyHouse.com stocks programmable thermostats from Honeywell, White-Rodgers, Robertshaw, and Lux.

Don’t Oversize Your AC

Air conditioners must be sized by the number of BTUs they can remove from the air in the space they cool. Ratings are commonly measured in tons (1 ton = 12,000 BTUs). When selecting a properly-sized air conditioner, room size is not the only relevant factor. Amount of sunlight exposure, insulation quality, and the number of room occupants should also be taken into account.

While it may be tempting to oversize an air conditioner to make sure there will always be enough cooling power, there are downsides to this approach. An air conditioner that is too large will cycle on and off more frequently. It will not permit optimal energy efficiency and won't allow the unit to remove as much humidity from the room. Air conditioners will dehumidify most effectively when they run for longer periods of time. Visit SupplyHouse.com for all your air conditioning and mini-split needs this summer.

Sizing Circulator Pump Flanges

Most circulator pumps require flanges to connect to the piping in a hydronic system. For standard-sized pumps, flanges have a universal size. They may need to be purchased separately from the pump. Flanges are sold in pairs and include the nuts, bolts, and gaskets necessary for connection.

Pumps do not always come with flanges because of variances in pipe size. Standard 3/4” and 1” flanges fit on the same pump. They match up with 3/4” and 1” pipes, respectively. SupplyHouse.com offers shut-off flanges from Taco and Isolation Flanges from Webstone. Bronze flanges are ideal for use in open systems.

Disconnecting SharkBite Fittings

SharkBite fittings connect to PEX, copper, and CPVC tubing. They do not require any tools for installation, making them perfect for small, DIY projects. SharkBite fittings lock directly onto tubing for a secure and leak-free link. The connections are so strong that simply pulling the fittings off is impossible.

Disconnecting Shark-Bite fittings requires a small, inexpensive tool. A properly sized clip or set of tongs must be used to remove SharkBite fittings from any kind of piping. The process is as easy as the installation. Just push the tool against the fitting’s release collar and twist the tube out of the fitting. Full instructions and a helpful diagram can be found on Page 4 of the SharkBite Installation Guide.

High Altitude Products

In areas with high elevation, standard appliances may not be able to function properly. Before installing a boiler or water heater in a location with an altitude higher than 2,000 feet, it is a good idea to check the unit’s ratings. Depending on the manufacturer, standard boilers or water heaters can operate up anywhere up to 5,000 feet above sea level.

Models designed specifically for high altitude applications are available from certain manufacturers. Others require special parts or unique settings for units to work at full capacity in elevated locations. With some manufacturers, high altitude parts do not exist. Their units may operate at high altitudes, but at less than full capacity.

SupplyHouse.com can order high altitude models and parts from many manufacturers. For information on specific boilers or water heaters, consult their specifications. Contact our customer service department at 1-888-757-4774 for assistance ordering high altitude parts.

Another Advantage of Mini-Splits

Mini-split air conditioning systems operate on a simple concept: indoor units connected to outdoor condensing units with refrigerant line-sets. This creates some key advantages over traditional air conditioning systems. With mini-splits there is easy temperature control among zones, no ductwork, and no noisy units blocking windows.

The fact that indoor mini-split units receive their electrical power directly from the outdoor unit can be easy to overlook. But, when it comes to designing a room, this may be the biggest plus of installing a mini-split. Outdoor units usually require a dedicated circuit for power. Wiring will run, alongside the line-set, to each indoor unit. This means no plugs or wires will be visible in the living space.

SupplyHouse.com carries mini-split systems from all the top manufactures: Sanyo, LG, Fujitsu, and Panasonic.

Increase Efficiency with an OVD

With a Field Controls Oil Vent Damper (OVD), you can improve the efficiency of your heating system. The dampers, available in 4” – 8” sizes, can give you huge savings on your heating bill. Installed in vent piping between the draft control and chimney, the OVD opens automatically when your boiler runs. With two safety switches to ensure proper operation, the OVD remains open for 3 minutes after a call for heat ends. This allows all combustion gases to vent before the damper closes to prevent drafts and reduce heat loss. You can be sure that less heat will escape through vents and more will end up in the living space where it belongs.

Since it stops residual heat in the burner chamber from escaping through the chimney, the OVD can yield a 5% to 10% savings in energy costs, and up to a 2% gain in AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency). A seven-foot wiring harness is included. Oil Vent Dampers cannot be used with direct vent systems, sealed combustion systems, or vaporizing type burners.

Sizing Copper Fittings

When selecting copper fittings for plumbing and heating applications, the inside diameter of the copper pipe is the only dimension to take into consideration. Copper classified as 1 inch pipe, for example, has an inside diameter of 1 inch. This means that if you must connect two pieces of 1 inch pipe with an elbow, you should use a 1” x 1” elbow. The elbow does not measure exactly 1 inch, but it accepts 1 inch copper.

The inside diameter (ID) and outside diameter (OD) of a piece of copper (pipe or fittings) differ by 1/8”. Therefore the 1” pipe will have an OD of 1-1/8”. In order to fit over the pipe, the 1” x 1” elbow will have an ID of slightly over 1-1/8”. Its OD, as a result, would be 1-1/4".

Keep in mind that these rules only apply to copper used for plumbing and heating. In air conditioning and refrigeration situations, copper is sized by outside diameter.

Keep PEX Out of the Sun

PEX tubing gives users more options in their plumbing and heating systems. It costs less than traditional piping, bends around corners and obstructions without fittings, and comes in different colors to make identification easier. PEX resists freezing more effectively than other types of piping, retains its original shape, and gives users choices when they select fitting systems.

One of PEX’s limitations comes to mind during the bright days of spring: it cannot be exposed to direct sunlight. The ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun break PEX tubing down and make it brittle. PEX that runs outside should normally be buried. If this is not an option, we recommend sleeving the PEX in PVC.

Hot Water in an Instant

Are you tired of waiting for hot water to reach your shower every day? Do you shake your head as wasted cold water flows down the drain? SupplyHouse may have the solution: a hot water recirculation pump. These pumps allow you to get instant hot water at the turn of the faucet and can result in big savings on your water bill. When you turn off a shower or faucet, the water sitting in the pipes gradually loses its warmth through a process known as standby loss. This is the first water released for the next usage. Recirculation pumps cycle this water back to the water heater to ensure you get hot water right away.

Circulator pumps with high head and low flow rates (a Taco 009, for example) work for this type of application. But if you’re looking for a product designed specifically for the job, SupplyHouse recommends a Grundfos Comfort Series Hot Water Recirculation Pump. These pumps include a timer that forces water back to the heater through the cold water line at set times. This easy-to-install product uses less energy than a 25-watt light bulb, and can save up to 16,000 gallons of water per year.

Controlled by a state-of-the-art Equipment Interface Module, these systems enable wireless control of up to 3 indoor air quality devices with only 2 wires at the thermostat. This makes installation easy and significantly reduces the amount of wiring running through the living space. With one of these systems, you can control humidification, dehumidification, and ventilation right at your thermostat.

Prestige IAQ thermostats (THX9421R5005) feature a high definition touchscreen, intuitive controls, customizable service reminders, and a USB port. You can take the Portable Comfort Control (REM5000R1001), better known as the remote control, anywhere in your home. Whether you are in your bedroom or watching a movie in the living room, it allows you to sense and control temperature wirelessly at any location. Honeywell’s RedLINK enabled wireless outdoor sensor (C7089R1013) measures temperature and humidity. It provides frost protection when used with a humidifier.

Honeywell’s YTHX9421R5010 kit includes all these parts. If you don’t need every component, we also offer more basic kits at SupplyHouse.com.

Miles of PEX Tubing

Most of us know that PEX tubing is used for plumbing and heating homes and buildings, both large and small. Another PEX application that may not be as well-known continues to grow in popularity: heated playing fields. Among the venues with radiant heat beneath the surface are Soldier Field in Chicago, Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, and Target Field in Minneapolis.

Why do sports franchises install these systems? The warmer turf helps grass stay greener, makes freezing temperatures easier to deal with, and reduces the chance of injuries. Heated fields also prevent snow from piling up during the big game. With an outdoor snow melt system from SupplyHouse.com you can make sure you will never miss a minute of the action while you shovel your driveway. Amazingly, Football field installations require about 30 miles of PEX tubing. Just as in home installations, the water flowing through the PEX must not get too hot. In this case it is the grass (not your bare feet) that must be protected.

These tanks feature stainless steel system connections and molded polypropylene liners. They meet low lead laws and satisfy the requirements of water heater manufacturers. Easier Install w/ Flared Line Sets

A line set is a conduit that consists of a liquid line and a suction line, used to connect the indoor and outdoor units of a mini-split air conditioner.

Until the system is fully installed and operating, the refrigerant will be contained in the outdoor unit. Once the system is running, the refrigerant will flow through, making it critical to have secure flared connections. Flared connections are made with a special tool and must be extremely accurate to prevent leaking. If you do not have the flaring tool, or would like to save a step in making the connections, you can get flared refrigerant line sets, which are flared during production by the manufacturer.

Both standard and flared refrigerant line sets of various lengths are at www.supplyhouse.com. Visit SupplyHouse to find all the components you need for your mini-split air conditioning system.

Choosing the Right Expansion Tank

Need help determining what size expansion tank you need? Whether you need a tank for your heating system, plumbing system, or a system that uses a well, our new Extrol calculator can tell you which model you need with just a few simple questions. For a heating system, you will need to provide the BTU load of your boiler and information on what type of heat you have, such as baseboard, radiators, or radiant heat. With this information, we can calculate which Extrol tank you need. For a plumbing system, you will need to know the size and temperature setting of your water heater to find out what Therm-X-trol tank will fit your system. Well-x-trol tank size depends on the GPM and horsepower of your circulator pump.

A large selection of Amtrol expansion tanks can be found at SupplyHouse.com. Feel free to try out our calculator in the Resource Center if you need help making your selection.

Sump Pumps & Effluent Pumps

There are three main categories of plumbing pumps available at www.supplyhouse.com. Sump pumps remove only water and should be installed underground, such as in a hole dug out in your basement. The pump will automatically turn if the float device senses the water has reached a certain level. An effluent pump has a similar construction but can handle small amounts of debris mixed into the water, such as leaves. Both types of pumps can be connected to a garden hose or PVC pipe, which is used to transport the water out to a disposal area.

Little Giant and Zoeller are our most popular brands for these pumps and can be found in the plumbing category.

Easy Clean-up From April Showers

If the rain is causing unexpected flooding and you need a sump pump for a one time clean-up, Zoeller Floor Sucker pumps can come to the rescue. They are easy to use and have a threaded connection for a standard garden hose. They also have an automatic shut-off so the pump will turn off when the water is cleared rather than burning out. Simply plug in your pump and submerge it in the flooded area to remove water from an area down to 1/8 inch.

These Floor Sucker utility pumps are great for a one-time clean-up in your home. Larger sump pumps and effluent pumps are available for preventative installation if you live in an area at high risk for floods. These pumps are designed for installation underground, such as a pit dug in your basement. They work with a float device that tells the pump to activate if water reaches a certain level.

Visit SupplyHouse.com for a large selection of sump pumps, effluent pumps, sewage pumps and utility pumps, and remember the utility pumps are your best bet if you get hit with an unexpected flood and don't want to invest to much in a pump for one-time use.
